TSW, CANADA (BP) - The Ballers hit the road for the first time this season on a huge adrenaline rush after last week's 51-7 victory over the North American NDLer's. There was a lot of expectation for this game and the team delivered both on offense and defense and even special teams with an amazing 8 for 8 field goals from kicker Troy Westwood.
"I hit the gym hard in the offseason and really worked at getting myself up to the next level. I've missed some important kicks in the past and I used that as motivation to make myself strive to be the best kicker I can be. My goal for this season was to greatly improve my field goal percentage and so far, mission accomplished," an exhausted Troy Westwood told the Press.
The offense showed up to play today and wound up with another dominating performance combining for 460 net yards, 316 through the air and 143 on the ground. Critics have suggested that Offensive Co-Ordinator Ryan Betesta jinxed the team into having to settle for field goals after calling the Forum, a field goal free zone.
"Certainly I'm eating crow now but its not like the drives were stalling deep in TSW territory, we had 1 drive stall in the red zone and most of the others were unable to advance far enough in so Troy certainly helped us out. Their defense held together when it needed to and made some key stops. I don't think there is anything wrong with our offense, we still managed to score two touchdowns and some teams have trouble scoring even one and oh ya, 8 field goals to go on top of that. It would be a different story if the field goals were missed or we lost the game but for now, our offense is in tip top shape and there is nothing to worry about," Ryan Betesta assured the Blacksburg fans.
The Ballers were able to get into position for so many field goals based to the outstanding play once again of the Ballers defense with a total of 5 interceptions, 1 by Slasher Evans, Oscar Michael Jordan Robertson, LB Aaron Wilson, Defensive End Speed McLovin' and Nose Tackle Big Daddy Hawkeye.
"I'm as surprised as anyone," said Big Daddy Hawkeye,"as a defensive linemen, you're trained to get your hands up whenever the QB throws the ball but you never expect to grab a hold of it. Its quite a thrill."
The Ballers defense stepped up their game shutting down the run to only 24 yards and the pass to 155 yards which is almost half what TSW got on them the last time around. The turnover battle was the deciding factor as Brady Kiel threw an unusual 5 interceptions while Khari Jones stepped his game up and managed to not throw any.
"It's definitely nice to go out there and not have this monkey on my back. I'm always concerned about going there and throwing a pick because it happened so often last season and its nice to not be able to. I certainly would've liked to have thrown a couple more touchdowns but you take what you can get from that defense. There were a lot of opportunities that their CB's missed and a lot of them I have my receivers to thank for saving my ass," QB Khari Jones.
One of those receivers is Touchdown-Only Owens who hauled in 8 catches for 133 yards, several of which were deflected by receivers, including one score for 54 yards in the second quarter.
"This season, we brought in the big guns (referring to Betesta and Wilson) but today's game goes to show you that us receivers, we are a team and any given sunday, anyone of us can break out and have an amazing performance and tonight was just my night," said a thrilled Owens.
The Blacksburg Press had a hard time deciding today's recepient of the game ball so they posted a poll for the fans on our website. With exceptional performances from Khari Jones (31/51 for 316.5 yards), Touchdown-Only Owens (8 receptions for 133 yards and a TD), Speed McLovin' (6 tackles, 5 for a loss, 2 pass deflections, 1 hurry and 1 interception), Troy Westwood (8 for 8 field goals and 2 for 2 XPs) and Aaron Wilson (6 tackles, 2 pass deflections and 1 interception), the fans have voted and declared that Troy Westwood should have the game ball for his amazing precision and distance at field goal kicking. This is the first time in 3 weeks that Speed McLovin' has not won the game ball and the last person before him was Troy in week 15 of last season.
This is Troy's 4th game ball.
The Ballers will now head back to a packed house in Blacksburg to take on the Abbotsford Miners. Abbotsford is coming off of a 19-12 over the North American NDLers who the Ballers beat badly in week 1 so the fans should be prepared for a spectacle. This will mark the 2nd time these two teams have played and last time, it was a Ballers shutout victory 25-0 and they are intent on improving that.
"They better pull out all stops," Aaron Wilson tells the Press, "We're not going to give them an inch. Our defense is hungry for turnovers and it's feeding time!"
