Game Preview: Week #10 Blacksburg Ballers @ Forumopolis

Blacksburg Ballers (9-0)
@
Forumopolis Fighting Llamas (8-1)

Canada Day will certainly be a day worth celebrating in the Canadian AAA #2 league as fans will be treated to one of the biggest games so far in the regular season between the undefeated Blacksburg Ballers and the 8-1 Forumopolis Fighting Llamas. Forumopolis lost a tough matchup to the Phoenixville Kings in week 1 of this season but has since rebounded with 8 straight victories including a 9-0 shutout of the Thunder Bay Storm. The Ballers are coming off their biggest win (points wise) against the Los Angeles Trojans that saw many club records get smashed. The Ballers are certainly going to have their work cut out for them this week and are hoping for much more than just fireworks.

The History So Far...

The Ballers and Llamas have only met once before and that was in week #2 of season #2. Khari Jones went 21 for 29 with a TD and 170 yards passing in one of his finest performances of the season and Troy Westwood went 3 for 3 on field goals but the big star of the day was the defense who picked up a fumble recovery and two interceptions, one returned all the way for the score by Beast Baily as the Ballers emerged victorious 30-16. That would be only one of two losses that the Llamas would suffer in the regular season, the other at the hands of the Mooresville Anglers.

Team Stats

Blacksburg Ballers

Points Per Game: 49.6 (3rd in League)
Points Allowed Per Game: 7.4 (2nd in League)
Passing Yards Per Game: 274.6
Passing Yards Allowed Per Game: 189.9
Rushing Yards Per Game: 173.6
Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game: 34.1 (No Touchdowns Allowed)

Forumopolis Fighting Llamas

Points Per Game: 26.6
Points Allowed Per Game: 9
Passing Yards Per Game: 196.8
Passing Yards Allowed Per Game: 163.1
Rushing Yards Per Game: 155.6
Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game: 34.3

Key Ballers

Khari Jones

Its a given that anytime Khari stops on the field he will have to be a key player but this week more so than ever. The Llamas are coming off a shutout victory against the Thunder Bay Storm and that has to leave Khari just a tad bit worried. Khari's season has certainly taken a turn for the better in the last few weeks capping a 7 TD on 24 pass performance against the Trojans. Khari has only been picked off 10 times this season which is very low amongst starting quarterbacks. He's going to need to bring the drive to help make sure that his team does not get shut out.

Elite Rusher

Coming off a tremendous performance that included 11 hurries but no sacks, Elite Rusher will play a large role in making sure that pressure is put on Rocket McCannonarm and making him make bad decisions.

Slasher Evans

The Interception King as of late will need to be in top form against this tough wide receiving corps but Evans has what it takes to keep up with them and knock down a few balls and even pick a few off. The Ballers are still leading the league in interceptions with 30 and hope to shut down the air attack from Forumopolis.

The Ballers Offensive Line

The Forumopolis front line is beastly! Forcing 57 hurries and 26 sacks, Khari could be in for a long day but the o-line certainly has something to say about that. Khari has only been hurried 26 times and sacked 4 times so this is an offensive line that can hold their own and if they want to win, they better.

Record Watch

So many records got broken last week that there is hardly any room for anymore to be broken this week so there won't be. Atleast, not they were aware of as of yet. Hopefully next week we will get to see Khari chase another record, this one for passing yardage in a season which he is quickly closing in on.

Summary

The Ballers have proven that they can hang with the best taking victories over Phoenixville, Mooresville and Thunder Bay. They also have proven in the past that they can hang with Forumopolis delivering only one of two regular season losses last year to them. Both teams are riding high on momentum and only one will get to continue on this path. If the Ballers can get the ball rolling, Forumopolis might just be another pin that gets knocked down.

Ballers Embarass Trojans 171-0

BLACKSBURG (BP) -- Coming off one of the biggest victories in franchise history after defeating the Thunder Bay Storm 20-16 the Ballers recorded one of the biggest blowouts in franchise history, a 171-0 blowout of the Los Angeles Trojans. The game featured some of the most mind-boggling statistics in American football history. Including over 1000 yds of total offense for the Ballers, 87 points scored by the Ballers in the first half, and forcing Los Angeles into 9 interceptions 4 of which were caught by the Ballers's Slasher Evans.

"It was one of the most interesting games I've ever played in my career," Evans said who followed his game saving deflection against the Thunder Bay Storm last week with another incredible performance this week. "I appreciate the coaching staff giving me the opportunity to start. Hopefully they recognized that even though we knew this team was heavily underdogged and outmatched by us, that I can still play in big games and start as a cornerback for this defense."

As a whole the Ballers defense was phenomenal. They held Los Angeles to 100 yds of total offense, -11.5 rushing and 115.5 passing. They also had 26 hurries and picked off 9 passes in the game.

"This was one of the more bizarre games I've been in," Defensive tackle Elite Rusher said who had 11 hurries in the game. "It seemed as though these guys just could not do anything against us and it was almost like child's play. I think even our coaching staff was thinking about just stopping the game after the first quarter because it was so bad."

And the entire game the Ballers continued their relentless attack. The offense racked up 1005 total yds, 639 rushing and 366 passing. QB Khari Jones threw 7 TD's and 4 Ballers running backs combined for 15 rushing TD's.

"It was just ridiculous out there," Fullback Russell Roch said who had 125 rushing yds, 5 rushing TD's, and 14 broken tackles. "It seemed like when a guy would come at you and try to tackle you down, they would just bounce right off. Didn't matter if he was a huge defensive lineman or some safety they just could not stop us."

And the game did not stop either. Once the dust was cleared 171 points were put up by the Ballers, a team record. And the Trojans managed to put up no points during the 60 minutes of slaughter.

Next week though the Ballers will not have as much of an easy time as it was against the Trojans. They will face the Forumopolis Fighting Llamas who are currently 8-1 and 3rd in the Canadian AAA#2 Western Conference. The Ballers had an easy time beating the Llamas last year after a 30-16 beating. However with a rejuvenated team and an understanding of the Ballers style of play that beat them so badly, the Llamas will be no joke.

Game Preview: Week #9 Los Angeles Trojans @ Blacksburg Ballers

BLACKSBURG, VA - The Blacksburg Ballers arrived back in Blacksburg today to an enormous crowd at the Blacksburg airport. The Ballers return from Thunder Bay marks the halfway point of the season and the Ballers are still undefeated after weathering the Storm and emerging with a 20-16 victory. This keeps the Ballers on the top of the leaderboard, tied with the Mt. Oread Hawk Stars. The Ballers turned the ball over four times but the defense was able to hold it together and keep Thunder Bay at bay in one of the biggest wins in franchise history. This week, its like a practice game cause the Ballers are hosting the Los Angeles Trojans who have yet to pick up a victory in the Canadian AAA #2.

The Season Thus Far

The Los Angeles Trojans transferred into Canada this year and have certainly not been welcomed with open arms. They have managed to score 15 points this season, no touchdowns and have been shut out 4 times. They recently just got blown out by the Phoenixville Kings 110-0 and this week should be no better for them as the Ballers will tear them apart.

The Ballers have had the complete opposite, winning 8 straight games (plus 2 preseason games) and have won by double digits 6 times and hold victories over the Phoenixville Kings and the Thunder Bay Storm. The Ballers have a tougher second half of the schedule but their first half was no slouch either and they are within reach of locking up a playoff spot already. The Ballers passing offense has been clicking with the improved performance of Khari Jones who leads the Western Conference in passing yards, touchdowns, yards per game, and has the fewest interceptions out of the starters but his passing completion percentage is one of the lowest once again. This week will give Khari a great chance to pad the stats.

Season Stats

Blacksburg Ballers

Points Per Game: 34.4
Points Allowed Per Game: 8.4
Passing Yards Per Game: 263.1
Passing Yards Allowed Per Game: 199.8
Rushing Yards Per Game: 115.4
Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game: 39.8 (No Touchdowns Allowed)

Los Angeles Trojans

Points Per Game: 1.9
Points Allowed Per Game: 52.3
Passing Yards Per Game: 114.6
Passing Yards Allowed Per Game: 220.8
Rushing Yards Per Game: 0.3
Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game: 285

Key Ballers

This week, any Baller that puts on a jersey will be a key Baller as there really is no way to differentiate this game. The Ballers defense will smother the Trojans and the offense should just walk all over them. Look for a big game from the defense full of sacks, fumbles and interceptions.

Record Watch

Troy Westwood tied his field goal record last game of 31 field goals in a season and is one away from breaking it. He did have the opportunity twice last week to do it but missed from 44.5 and 57 yards out. This one might have to wait til next week cause the Ballers might not have to settle for any field goals.

Khari Jones is 6 touchdowns away from tying and 7 from breaking his passing touchdowns in a season. Against a slouch defense like this one, the record might be in reach but most likely, will have to wait til next week.

Jesse Lumsden broke one record last week and is likely to break another. He's just 20 rushing attempts away from breaking the single season record of 147 attempts.

Speed McLovin' is 4 hurries away from breaking his single season hurry record and against this offensive line, this one will likely be broken in the first quarter.

Maybe a little far fetched, but Beast Baily is 10 pass deflections away from the single season record that he currently holds of 34 in a season.

Numerous team records could be on the line including most points scored and touchdowns scored as well as fewest net yards allowed. These could be pipe dreams but 15 touchdowns may not be that unreasonable.

Summary

If I were a betting man, I would bet the farm, the neighbour's farm and every other farm in the county on the Ballers. The Trojans have are a faulty brand and will not look good against this offense and will look even worse against this defense.

*On a very interesting side note, we have almost maxed out our medium income fan support which is at 77 now. It was at 67 before the Thunder Bay game so we gained 10 there as well as 5 in the high income and thats our biggest gain so far this season. We should sell a whole ton of season tickets next year because of this.*

Finally! Ballers Beat Storm 20-16

THUNDER BAY (BP) -- The Blacksburg Ballers have finally done it. After losing to the Storm 2 straight times including a heartbreaking loss in the season 2 playoffs, the Ballers have pulled off a victory against their archrivals 20-16.

"It feels like a huge weight has come off our shoulders," QB Khari Jones said who was mobbed by teammates following the victory. "We prepared and prepared for this game and we just executed like I knew we could. I just have to give a huge shoutout to everybody on the Ballers and say we've done it!"

The Ballers certainly "did it" during the game. They were able to have success on offense, gaining 72.5 yds on the ground and 273 yds through the air. Khari Jones threw 2 TD strikes as well and Jesse Lumsden and Russell Roch combined for 67.5 yds on the ground.

"The success we had on offense was really surprising," Starting guard Hank Hitch said who finished with 3 pancakes. "Not to say we aren't capable of making plays, but to have a really solid offensive game against one of the best defenses in the league was very unexpected. I thought we would see a 6-3 or 9-7 game, but for us to get some nice scores was a real boost for our confidence."

The confidence carried over to the defense as well where the Ballers held one of the more potent offensive attacks to 320 total yds. Thunder Bay star running back Bucho Jones-Drew, who had 10 rushing touchdowns coming into the game, was held scoreless and only managed 48 yds on the ground.

Through the air the Ballers allowed only 217.5 passing yds and QB Bill Butcher was harassed all day, hurried 9 times by the Baller defense.

"We were just relentless on the line," Defensive end Tommy Canada said who had 3 hurries and 1 tackle for loss. "There was pressure from all sides and we were able to get by their tackles and get on the edge. Their quarterback wasn't real mobile either so disrupting him wasn't too much of a problem."

Another disruption happened at the end of the game. With the game on the line and down by 4, the Storm marched down the field from their own 36.5 yard line to the Ballers 4.5 yard line. The Ballers then dug themselves in and forced QB Bill Butcher into 4 straight incomplete passes ending the game. Including the final 4th and goal pass which was broken up by cornerback Slasher Evans.

"I can't tell you how happy I am," Evans said who finished with 4 tackles and the crucial pass breakup. "I just made a read on the quarterback and just broke up the play. It fells great to accomplish something like this especially since this is my first year as a Baller. It almost feels like I've initiated myself into the team and really proved what I can do."

Next week the Ballers will have to prove what they can do again against the Los Angeles Trojans. The Trojans are in a rebuilding year and are currently 0-8 and tied for last in the western conference. This should be a game where Blacksburg can try new strategies and give backups some playing time.

Game Preview: Week #8 Blacksburg Ballers @ Thunder Bay Storm

Blacksburg Ballers (7-0) @ Thunder Bay Storm (7-0)

Game of the Year, Clash of the Titans…David vs Goliath? No matter what you call it, Friday’s game will be a battle of epic proportions between 2 of the 3 undefeated teams left in the Western Conference. The Blacksburg Ballers riding high off a 19-18 victory over the Phoenixville Kings head to Thunder Bay to face the Storm for the 4th time in their rivalry. The Ballers last faced the Storm in the first round of last seasons playoffs and lost in a tough 28-13 battle. Since then, the Ballers are currently on a 7 game winning streak (plus two more in the preseason) and have looked much better than last season. Thunder Bay is no slouch either posting 7 straight victories as well over quality teams such as the Saskatoon Raiders and the Moose Island Sofa Kings and are one of the leagues top offenses and defenses.

The History

The two teams have met three times and the Storm were the Ballers Achille’s heel in season 2 posting two victories over them.

In Season 1, the Ballers held the Thunder Bay offense to 168 yards in total offense while almost doubling them with 318.5 yards. Alex Casino would score on a rushing touchdown, Anthony Davinson would receive a catch for an 11 yard TD and Troy Westwood would add two field goals as the Ballers emerged victorious 20-3. Khari Jones would be held to 204.5 yards passing.

The teams would meet again in week 1 of season 2, and it would be a different story for the Storm’s offense who netted 313 yards and two TD passes. Jones would complete for 226.5 yards with a TD and an INT but the rushing game would suffer, only amounting to 21.5 yards and losing the turnover battle with two fumbles as the Storm took the game, 21-10.

The Ballers would rebound and find their way to the playoffs with a first round date with Thunder Bay but it would be much of the same as the rushing game stuttered with 47 yards and losing 2 fumbles as well as Khari throwing 213.5 yards but also 3 interceptions and would be crushed by the turnovers, 28-13.

Season Stats

Blacksburg Ballers

Points Per Game: 36.4
Points Allowed Per Game: 7.3 (2nd in League)
Passing Yards Per Game: 261.7
Passing Yards Allowed Per Game: 197.2
Rushing Yards Per Game: 121.5
Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game: 30.9

Thunder Bay Storm

Points Per Game: 42.9
Points Allowed Per Game: 5.4 (1st in League)
Passing Yards Per Game: 242.3
Passing Yards Allowed Per Game: 129.3 (1st in League)
Rushing Yards Per Game: 209.3 (1st in League)
Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game: 28.7

Key Ballers

Khari Jones

Khari has certainly had his share of troubles against the Thunder Bay Storm in the past but will be looking to exorcise his demons on Friday when he faces them. Khari is the lifeblood of this offense and if he clicks with them, they can take it to the Storm defense and score more than 5.4 points.

Gordon D’Arcy

The game ball winner for week #7 was a royal pain in the ass to King Hine picking off three of his passes. D’Arcy was also involved in the punt returns and the lack of depth at CB took its toll on D’Arcy who ended the game giving up a 73.5 yard touchdown which would’ve tied the game had the Kings kicker not missed the extra point. D’arcy will need to be prime to shut down the Storm’s offense who are very efficient in the air.

Ryan Betesta

“Mr. First Down” spent last season tearing apart USA AAA #1 defenses but has been average this season, averaging 73 yards a game and only scoring 3 times. The Storm’s defense is #1 against the pass and Betesta has something to say about that. He’s looking to break out and this could be the game to do so.

The Defensive Line

The d-line has been stellar all season long and has only allowed an average of 30.9 rushing yards per game but will be put to the ultimate test against the league’s best rushing attack who averages 209.3 yards a game. They will definitely need to clog the holes and force the rushing game to stall if they hope to win the game.

Record Watch

Jesse Lumsden is still searching for the single season rushing record and is 33 yards away. Those yards will be very hard earned today against a stellar defense but today could be the day that this record gets broken.

Troy Westwood is also chasing a record of his own, Westwood is two field goals away from tying and 3 from breaking his single season field goal completed record. With two great defenses, we could see a lot of field goals today and it is likely that this is another record that will get broken at the half way point of the season.

The Ballers have certainly looked better since the last time they met the Storm and most importantly, on the defensive side and their ability to force turnovers. The Storm have rarely looked tested this season with a fairly easy starting schedule and the Ballers will certainly test them. If the Ballers can control the football and avoid turnovers, this game could easily go the Ballers way.

Ballers Escape 19-18 on Missed PAT

BLACKSBURG (BP) -- The Blacksburg Ballers today almost had victory snatched away from them following a late TD pass by the Phoenixville Kings. However a missed point after attempt by Kings's kicker Bubba Bubba prevented the game from being tied.

"It was a huge relief," TE BJ said who finished the game with 2 catches for 13 yards. "I thought to myself 'oh no' when they got that big touchdown pass at the end. But they missed the point after which really saved us."

Reminiscent of John Carney's missed field goal that lost the Saints a heartbreaker in the "River City Relay". The Saints lost the game after lateraling the ball numerous times and pulling within one point after the touchdown however Carney missed the PAT and the Saints went on to lose to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"It did remind me of that game," OT Fatty McMuffin told the Blacksburg Press who had a touchdown saving tackle after Khari Jones threw an interception. "Certainly you make a huge play like that and all the guys are celebrating, but what you forget is that you still have that one point you need to make. And if you don't make that then it just negates all the hard work it took to get there."

Hard work it was. There were only 2 touchdowns scored the entire game and 8 field goals between the two teams. Not to mention 8 fumbles, 4 interceptions, and neither team was able to reach above 2.2 ypc on the ground.

"Things were very bizarre," LB Aaron Wilson said who finished with 10 tackles. "Both of us would have drives going and then all of a sudden a fumble would occur. I think if the mistakes were taken out of the game then this would have been a much higher scoring game. I was just surprised that both teams made the same mistakes."

Defensively though there certainly were few mistakes, but eerily the same ones. Both teams gave up a big passing play that turned into their team's respective only score, a 43.5 yds strike to John Wilson for the Ballers and a 73.5 yd one to Hollywood Mitchell for the Kings. Also both teams were able to force turnovers and get pressure on the respective QB's. There were 4 hurries against the Kings and 3 hurries as well as 2 sacks against the Ballers.

"There was a lot of pressure from both teams," QB Khari Jones said who finished with 220 yds and a score. "I think you get two very good defensive teams on the field and you expect this sort of game. I imagined there would be maybe a little more throwing room for me but Phoenixville did an absolutely fantastic job."

However not to be outdone, the Ballers had their fair share of pressure on the QB which resulted in 3 interceptions...all to one player.

"It's amazing really how that happened," CB gordon d'arcy said who managed to intercept all 3 of Phoenixville's King Hine's passes. "I just made some good breaks on the ball and their receivers had some communication trouble with the quarterback. When it happened the third time though I was surprised because coming in this season I hadn't even played cornerback that much so I wasn't expecting to have this much production.

After trading away cornerback Oscar Michael Jordan Robertson the Ballers moved d'arcy to the starting cornerback slot. This has highlighted d'arcy's speed that made him such a potent return specialist last season.

"It's worked out for the best," Defensive coordinator KB said. "He's worked well with the coaching staff and we've tried to get him to recognize routes and things. I think what's helped is that in order to be a return specialist you have to see different things and have great awareness. So his ability to read blocks and change direction quickly has transfered nicely over to the cornerback position."

The Ballers next opponent they face is one of their arch-rivals, the Thunder Bay Storm. The Storm and the Ballers have met twice during the regular season up until today's meeting, with the Ballers winning the season 1 matchup 20-3 and the Storm returning the favor 27-10 spoiling the Ballers season opener last season. Both teams come in undefeated at 7-0 and atop the Candian AAA #2 Western Conference. Some media outlets have even called this a "preview of what's to come in the conference final". While this may be a bit far fetched as there are many more talented teams in the mix, it is undeniable that this game will have a major impact on the Canadian AAA #2.

Game Preview: Week #6 Phoenixville Kings @ Blacksburg Ballers

Phoenixville Kings (4-2) @ Blacksburg Ballers (6-0)

The Blacksburg Ballers return home to the Ballers Bowl this afternoon with their undefeated record still in tact following a 65-0 slaughter of the Boston Barbarians that saw Khari Jones throw 5 touchdown passes. The Ballers will face their toughest challenge yet in the form of the Phoenixville Kings who come in with a 4-2 record. The Kings have had an interesting season thus far having just come off a big victory over Mooresville after losing to the North American NDLers in week #4. The Kings have the talent to take the Ballers to the limit and put the undefeated season at risk.

The History

The Ballers faced the Phoenixville Kings in season 1 in the debut of many players including Quarterback Khari Jones. A pass-happy offense saw Khari throw the ball 71 times completing 38 passes for 349.5 yards and 1 TD to Robtrouble Trouble but saw the Ballers fall short in a 24-13 loss.

The Ballers would meet the Kings again in week 11 of season 2 and this time would see a different result. Khari would only throw 49 times, completing 28 passes for 201 yards but would not complete any touchdowns and throw 2 interceptions. A 9-6 lead going into the 2 minute warning would change to a 16-6 lead for the Ballers following a Alex Casino rush for a TD. 20 seconds later, the Kings would connect for a 55 yard passing touchdown for their only touchdown of the game to narrow the gap back to 3 but the Ballers would hold them off to secure the victory.

Season Stats

Blacksburg Ballers

Points Per Game: 39.3
Points Allowed Per Game: 5.5 (1st in league)
Passing Yards Per Game: 268.7
Passing Yards Allowed Per Game: 190
Rushing Yards Per Game: 135.1
Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game: 23.5

Phoenixville Kings

Points Per Game: 29
Points Allowed Per Game: 12.3
Passing Yards Per Game: 212.7
Passing Yards Allowed Per Game: 213.6
Rushing Yards Per Game: 149.1
Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game: 67.6

Key Ballers

Khari Jones

Khari Jones good but not great season so far has been very important to the success of the Ballers and he will need to be on fire to take down this Kings’s defense who have had little success defending the pass. Jones is coming in after his best game of the season that saw him connect for 5 touchdowns but was still hampered with 2 interceptions for a total of 6 on the year. Jones has improved from last season but has yet to show that he is the breakout QB that people have been expecting from day 1.

Jesse Lumsden

Jesse Lumsden has brought consistency to the Ballers rushing game who have flip-flopped running backs for the past two seasons and has looked impressive in the past few games and is on the verge of breaking the Ballers single season rushing record of 527 yards held by Alex Casino. The Kings defense has been great at stopping the run and Lumsden is looking to take care of that.

Ballers Corners

Despite only making 2 interceptions in the last game against the Boston Barbarians, the Ballers d still leads the league with 18 interceptions but will be down to just 4 CB’s following the trade of CB Jack Robinson. The Ballers corners will have to stay focused and force a lot of 3 and outs or they may tire too quickly and give up some big yardage against this deep passing team.

Tommy Canada

Tommy Canada signed a contract extension today that will put him on the Ballers line til the end of next season. Although not putting up any stellar numbers, just one tackle, Canada has helped put pressure on offensive lines and is on the verge of having a breakout game and if he can pressure the QB, the Ballers defense could have a very solid game. As well, TJ Sweetness is very fumble prone so one hit by Canada could send the ball to the ground.

Game Balls

The Blacksburg Press would like to extend our apologies for the lack of post-game followup in the past few days. We would like to announce the following game ball awards for week #5 and week #6:

Week #5 – WR Ballhogg Irwin-Owens for his kickoff return for a TD and a combined 201.5 kickoff return yards.
Week #6 – TE BJ, 9 receptions for 95.5 yards and 3 touchdowns

Record Watch

Jesse Lumsden has a chance to break the Ballers single season rushing record of 527 yards held by Alex Casino. He will need at least 60 yards to do this.

The Ballers have a date around the corner with the Thunder Bay Storm who are also sporting a 6-0 record but the Ballers can not take the Phoenixville Kings lightly because they have the opportunity to end the streak and will make the most of the important. The Ballers have been unstoppable and this train plans to keep on chugging against Phoenixville.

Ballers Deliver Brutal Beating 32-0

BRUTAL (BP) - The Blacksburg Ballers rolled out the welcome carpet to the newest addition to the AAA and slammed the door right in their face. In fine Ballers fashion, the team displayed offensive and defensive excellence in securing their first shutout of the season, 32-0 over the Brutal Deluxe.

"There was a lot of hype going into this game because this is a team that has been to the top of a mountain (the AAA #3 Western Conference) but we proved today that they don't belong here and we do," Offensive Co-Ordinator Ryan Betesta.

Many labelled this as the first real test for the Ballers and if this was a test, they passed with flying colours mostly due to the impressive showing of the defense who brought in 5 interceptions and a fumble recovery. This team now leads the league in interceptions with 16; Beast Baily added to that total with 2 today.

"I just followed my receiver and played him tight and the dude kept throwing me the ball. There is nothing in the world sweeter than an interception and today I was fortunate to get two," CB Beast Baily.

The defense also manhandled them on the ground holding them to 2 yards rushing on 18 attempts. The dominating defensive line held their own and forced 12 rushes on the QB which could also attribute to the 5 interceptions as well as 3 sacks.

"We do what we can get to put pressure on the quarterback and today we did that very well. I didn't get any sacks but it's nice to see the DTs bullying their way through to punish the QB. I did force a fumble so take that Hawkeye," DE Speed McLovin'.

While the defense was kicking ass, the Ballers offense was no slouch either. Although putting up 426 yards of offense and over 300 yards in the air, the offense would once again rely on Troy Westwood who want 6/8 missing from 41 yards and 55 yards.

"I'm really frustrated, I had another shot to go 8/8 and prove my worth to the team and I blew it. Those 55+ yards kicks should be possible since I've been hitting 54 and 54.5 but I just can't break that hump yet and hopefully that doesn't come back to haunt us later in the season," Troy Westwood.

Much of the success of the offense comes down to the offensive line who for the 3rd straight game allowed no sacks on Khari Jones. Khari was pressured 5 times but was not sacked once and only threw one interception which was just great coverage and had no pressure on the play.

"As an offensive line, it's our job to protect the quarterback and once again we did it. It's not a glamourous job but someone's got to do it. I just like to go out there and pound the defensive line," Center Bricky Bonebreaker.

Khari also enraged the Brutal sidelines with his last second tactics in the 2nd quarter. Dinkin Jones intercepted the ball with 9 seconds left in the half and Khari and came onto the field to run the clock down. They lined up in formation to kneel the ball down but Khari took a few steps back and fired to Ryan Betesta who took the ball 65 yards for a Ballers score to end the half.

"People are going to hate this play but no one was expecting it and thats why it worked. I came to the line of scrimmage and I looked at the Brutal defense and they were exhausted and unmotivated. I glanced over at Betesta and we made eye contact and we knew what we had to do and we beat them for 6. That one touchdown couldn't meant everything and we have to give it our all," QB Khari Jones.

Ryan Betesta lead the receiving corps today with 9 catches for 162.5 yards and a TD to cap off Khari's 24/46, 307.5 yards and 2 touchdowns performance. It was a tough day for the Ballers offense despite the numbers as Brutal stopped them short several times and forced many deflections on Khari's throws.

The Ballers return home on Saturday for what should be a tough match of revenge against the Mooreville Anglers. The Anglers are coming off their 2nd win of the season against the Abbotsford Miners, after dropping back to back games against Mt. Oread and the North American NDLers. The Ballers lost to the Anglers in season 2 in the season's most heartbreaking loss. Down by 4 with 2 minutes remaining, Khari would march the troops to the 1 yard line and throw 4 incompletions in a row to turn the ball over. The defense would step it up and the Ballers would get the ball back and down to the 10.5 yard line but 3 incompletions and a 1.5 yard loss on 4th down would end the game for the Ballers in heartbreaking fashion. The Ballers are looking to hit the ground running and Khari, who threw no touchdowns in that game, is looking to tear them apart in the air.

Today's game ball goes to Beast Baily for his 2 interceptions, 4 pass deflections and 1 tackle performance. This is Baily's 2nd game ball in a row.

Game Preview: Week #4 Blacksburg Ballers @ Brutal Deluxe

Blacksburg Ballers (3-0) @ Brutal Deluxe (2-1)

The Brutal Deluxe have entered the Canadian AAA this year after taking the Western Conference Championship last year in the AA #4. They have not been welcomed with open arms and have been given some tough games since joining the AAA but none will be as tough as their game against the turnover causing defense and high energy offense team that is the Blacksburg Ballers.

Season thus far...

Brutal Deluxe - Brutal Deluxe started off the season against the western conference favorites, Saskatoon Raiders and were dealt with a harsh 23-7 loss. Since that time, they have picked up victories against bottom dwelling Ottawa Chiefs and barely scraped by the TSW Titans with a 17-10 victory. This will be their toughest challenge yet as the Ballers are on fire.

Blacksburg Ballers - The Ballers have come out of the gates running with 3 straight victories. 51-7 over the North American NDLers, 38-3 over the TSW Titans and 27-10 over the Abbotsford Miners. The offense has looked sensational and the defense has looked even better shutting down teams left and right.

Making Their Debut

Only one Baller on the field today will be suiting up for the first time. A trade from the Madrid Stags for Teddy Martinez has new CB Marlin Jackson suiting up for the first time. Marlin has 17 tackles on the season and 14 pass deflections.

Don't expect Brutal to open their doors kindly but the Ballers aren't exactly the nicest of party guests either. This should be a very one sided affair despite Brutal's success against TSW and Ottawa.

Ballers Go Digging and Strike Gold 38-3

BLACKSBURG (BP) - 21,260 fans erupted this afternoon on the first play of the game after the kickoff today. Why you may ask? John Morton of the Abbotsford Miners threw the ball for the first time and it landed in the arms of cornerback Beast Baily. That would set the tone for much of the afternoon as the Ballers would intercept the ball three times on route to a 27-10 victory over the Abbotsford Miners.

"Normally it takes a couple plays to get the jitters and emotions out but I just saw my opportunity and took advantage of it and I don't think I've ever been in a stadium so loud as when I caught that ball, the fans just went nuts!" Beast Baily tells the press.

The very next drive would have similiar consequences for Morton and company as he would throw the ball into the arms of defensive end Speed McLovin', McLovin's 2nd interception in as many weeks. The big DE would also force the ball to the ground twice but the Ballers were unable to recover the fumbles.

"Wilson said it best last week when he said we were hungry for turnovers, and if we were hungry, today we are full from that buffet," McLovin' jokingly told the press.

The Ballers turnover machine now has 12 interceptions on the season and has only allowed an average of 6.66 points a game. This one would turn out to be one of the toughest ones from them giving up 10 points, 38.5 yards on the ground and 264.5 yards in the air, most of which can be attributed to new CB Teddy Martinez.

"It's all my fault, last night I was out partying with my boyfriend and he wanted me to get dirty with him. I knew I shouldn't have cause I twisted my neck pretty hard and its pretty stiff today...but not as stiff as him," Teddy Martinez smirked as everyone ackwardly looked at him.

The Ballers can confirm that immediately following today's contest, Martinez was traded to the Madrid Stags despite his 1 interception and 10 blown coverages. Martinez will be replaced by new CB, Marlin Jackson. Martinez will not be sorely missed.

The Ballers offense also came to play today as Khari Jones posted one of his best completion percentages ever going 28/40 (70%) with one TD and no interceptions. He connected early in the third with John Wilson for a 32 yard touchdown. Most of the scoring though would be done by Jesse Lumsden who ran the ball in twice. Lumsden would finish with 57 yards on the day.

"This certainly isn't the way I want to score touchdowns. These aren't even mine, I didn't deserve these. Other guys did all the work and I feel like I'm stealing touchdowns from them. I am glad that I was able to punch them in because I'd hate to have to settle for field goals again," A humble Lumsden said.

The Ballers next stop is in Brutal for a date with the Deluxe. The Deluxe are the Canadian AA #3 Western Conference champs and have faired quite well so far in AAA. They have beaten the Ottawa Chiefs and the TSW Titans and their only loss comes at the hands of the Saskatoon Raiders. This should be the Ballers first test since week #1 and a good warm-up for the match against Mooresville.

Today's game ball goes to the man that helped carry the load at CB with 12 tackles, 1 pass deflection and the game starting interception, the one and only Beast Baily!

Game Preview: Week #3 Abbotsford Miners @ Blacksburg Ballres

Abbotsford Miners (1-1) @ Blacksburg Ballers (2-0)

The Ballers return home today after a successful outing to TSW that amounted in a 38-3 victory with an outstanding performance by kicker Troy Westwood nailing 8 field goals on 8 attempts. The Baller Bowl is packed to the rim with the addition of 2260 more seats as the Abbotsford Miners head into town. Abbotsford started off the season with a loss but edged out the North American NDLers last week, 19-12. The Ballers defense is looking to raise hell once again after a 5 interception outing last week.

Season 2 Rewind

It's been a long time since these two teams met way back in week 4 of season 2. The Ballers defense will be looking for similiar results as last time when they shut out the Miners 25-0. On top of that, they pushed them back to -6 rushing yards and only 107 yards in the air. Khari and company had a semi-successful day putting up 88 yards on the ground and 269 yards in the air but would have to settle for one passing TD and 6 field goals. Troy Westwood received his first game ball in this game.

Making Their Debut

Following the departure of CB Oscar Michael Jordan Robertson, the Ballers are pleased to welcome his replacement by way of the Halifax Hawks of the Canadian AA #4, Teddy Martinez. Martinez has 9 tackles and 2 pass deflections so far this season and hopes to get more in this afternoon's game.

Keys to the Game

- Win the turnover battle! The Ballers have been a force on defense racking up interceptions and forcing fumbles and if this continues today, they can easily shut out the Miners.

- Fab Five air it out. These 5 wide receivers are hot and Khari is going to be looking endzone all afternoon.

- Go the extra inch! Too many drives stalled last week and settled for field goals. Our offense is better than that and this week, they have to be thinking touchdowns and pushing to convert on those 3rd downs.

Both teams have changed alot since last season but it appears the Ballers have made more changes for the better and should still easily bury the Miners.

Ballers Bowl Receives Further Renovations

BLACKSBURG (BP) - With the teams recent success, tickets have been flying off the shelves for the few remaining games with seats available. While the team was away in TSW, the Ballers Bowl received a very quick renovation that added an extra 260 club seats as well as 2000 seats in the corners.

This now brings the total capacity of the Ballers Bowl to 21,260 with more upgrades planned for the offseason that could bring the capacity up to 30,000.

Ballers fans have responded positively picking up these tickets for the new seats very quickly.
Tomorrow's game is sold out as well as the next 4 home games. There is still 10,000 seats available for the Saskatoon game in week 14 but those are expected to fly off the shelves in the next few days.

Ballers Kick Titans When They're Down 38-3

TSW, CANADA (BP) - The Ballers hit the road for the first time this season on a huge adrenaline rush after last week's 51-7 victory over the North American NDLer's. There was a lot of expectation for this game and the team delivered both on offense and defense and even special teams with an amazing 8 for 8 field goals from kicker Troy Westwood.

"I hit the gym hard in the offseason and really worked at getting myself up to the next level. I've missed some important kicks in the past and I used that as motivation to make myself strive to be the best kicker I can be. My goal for this season was to greatly improve my field goal percentage and so far, mission accomplished," an exhausted Troy Westwood told the Press.

The offense showed up to play today and wound up with another dominating performance combining for 460 net yards, 316 through the air and 143 on the ground. Critics have suggested that Offensive Co-Ordinator Ryan Betesta jinxed the team into having to settle for field goals after calling the Forum, a field goal free zone.

"Certainly I'm eating crow now but its not like the drives were stalling deep in TSW territory, we had 1 drive stall in the red zone and most of the others were unable to advance far enough in so Troy certainly helped us out. Their defense held together when it needed to and made some key stops. I don't think there is anything wrong with our offense, we still managed to score two touchdowns and some teams have trouble scoring even one and oh ya, 8 field goals to go on top of that. It would be a different story if the field goals were missed or we lost the game but for now, our offense is in tip top shape and there is nothing to worry about," Ryan Betesta assured the Blacksburg fans.

The Ballers were able to get into position for so many field goals based to the outstanding play once again of the Ballers defense with a total of 5 interceptions, 1 by Slasher Evans, Oscar Michael Jordan Robertson, LB Aaron Wilson, Defensive End Speed McLovin' and Nose Tackle Big Daddy Hawkeye.

"I'm as surprised as anyone," said Big Daddy Hawkeye,"as a defensive linemen, you're trained to get your hands up whenever the QB throws the ball but you never expect to grab a hold of it. Its quite a thrill."

The Ballers defense stepped up their game shutting down the run to only 24 yards and the pass to 155 yards which is almost half what TSW got on them the last time around. The turnover battle was the deciding factor as Brady Kiel threw an unusual 5 interceptions while Khari Jones stepped his game up and managed to not throw any.

"It's definitely nice to go out there and not have this monkey on my back. I'm always concerned about going there and throwing a pick because it happened so often last season and its nice to not be able to. I certainly would've liked to have thrown a couple more touchdowns but you take what you can get from that defense. There were a lot of opportunities that their CB's missed and a lot of them I have my receivers to thank for saving my ass," QB Khari Jones.

One of those receivers is Touchdown-Only Owens who hauled in 8 catches for 133 yards, several of which were deflected by receivers, including one score for 54 yards in the second quarter.

"This season, we brought in the big guns (referring to Betesta and Wilson) but today's game goes to show you that us receivers, we are a team and any given sunday, anyone of us can break out and have an amazing performance and tonight was just my night," said a thrilled Owens.

The Blacksburg Press had a hard time deciding today's recepient of the game ball so they posted a poll for the fans on our website. With exceptional performances from Khari Jones (31/51 for 316.5 yards), Touchdown-Only Owens (8 receptions for 133 yards and a TD), Speed McLovin' (6 tackles, 5 for a loss, 2 pass deflections, 1 hurry and 1 interception), Troy Westwood (8 for 8 field goals and 2 for 2 XPs) and Aaron Wilson (6 tackles, 2 pass deflections and 1 interception), the fans have voted and declared that Troy Westwood should have the game ball for his amazing precision and distance at field goal kicking. This is the first time in 3 weeks that Speed McLovin' has not won the game ball and the last person before him was Troy in week 15 of last season.

This is Troy's 4th game ball.

The Ballers will now head back to a packed house in Blacksburg to take on the Abbotsford Miners. Abbotsford is coming off of a 19-12 over the North American NDLers who the Ballers beat badly in week 1 so the fans should be prepared for a spectacle. This will mark the 2nd time these two teams have played and last time, it was a Ballers shutout victory 25-0 and they are intent on improving that.

"They better pull out all stops," Aaron Wilson tells the Press, "We're not going to give them an inch. Our defense is hungry for turnovers and it's feeding time!"

Game Preview: Week #2 Blacksburg Ballers @ TSW Titans

Blacksburg Ballers (1-0) at TSW Titans (1-0)

The Ballers kicked off the regular season with a bang and a decisive 51-7 victory in what could be labelled as the greatest victory in Ballers history. The Ballers look to continue their winning ways having won three in a row (including preseason) as they head into TSW. The Titans are no easy feat and are also coming off a week 1 victory over the Ottawa Chiefs. Both teams showcase a very talented offensive aerial arsenal and both defenses have the potential to force turnovers but only one team can prevail.

Season 2 Rewind

These two teams haven't been away from each other that long because they met in week 15 in a defensive struggle. The Titans defense held the Ballers to a combined 252 yards and only 145 yards passing. They also picked Khari off twice but the Ballers were able to control field position and edge by with a 20-16 victory. TSW took an early lead with a 4.5 yard rush by Alex Johansen just over 5 minutes into the game. TSW would make it 10-0 early in the 2nd off of a field goal. Khari would lead his troops down the field and find Ballhogg in the endzone for a 6 yard TD. TSW would manage another field goal to end the half up 13-7. Blacksburg looked like they would capitalize right away in the second half with an interception by Beast Baily but Khari would throw his 2nd interception the very next play. TSW would go on to score a field goal and take a 16-7 lead. The Ballers would intercept the ball again by Jack Robinson but the drive would stall and Ballers would have to rely on another interception by Aaron Wilson. The Ballers would capitalize on this mistake and Khari would connect with Ballhogg in the endzone once again to cut the lead to 16-14. The Ballers defense stepped it up on the next drive and Speed McLovin' held Rob Rowdy to a 3 yard gain on a 3rd and 4. This would set up a Troy Westwood 52 yard field goal to take the lead. The Ballers defense would once again force a three and out and Westwood would nail a 36 yarder to further the lead. The Titans would press late in the 4th but a deflection by Sargent Pepper with under two minutes to go would end the drive and the Ballers would hold on for a 20-16 victory. The Ballers won the turnover battle 3 interceptions to 2 and this could prove to be the difference once again this week.

Week 1 in Review

Blacksburg Ballers - The Ballers started the season with a decisive victory against the North American NDLers who beat the Ballers in season 2. The Ballers would score on their first drive with a 2 yard rush by Frank Davis for his first score as a Baller. 2 drives later and Russell Roch would punch it in for a 14-0 lead and the Ballers would never look back. Khari would throw 2 interceptions in the half but both would lead to no points. Troy Westwood would add a 36.5 field goal and Jesse Lumsden would score his first TD as a Baller to take a 24-0 lead to the locker room. Lumsden and Westwood would score again in the 3rd and new WR's Ryan Betesta and Wilson would each add a score to make it 48-0. The NDLers would stall on 4th down deep in Ballers territory with a tackle for a loss by Sev Sheppard. The Ballers would take over but could not move the ball and the NDLers would start with prime field position and this time they would punch it in for the only time in the game. In all, the Ballers offense would score 6 TD's and the Ballers defense would force 6 turnovers in complete domination of the NDLers.

TSW Titans - The Titans also opened up the regular season with a victory against the Ottawa Chiefs. TSW would open up with a field goal but the Chiefs would answer right back with a 78 yard pass from Bob Katt to Wayne Bowe. Brady Kiel of TSW would be quick to respond with a pass to Jason Amaya Jr. to retake the lead. Ottawa would score for the last time to retake the lead off a 3 yard Rich Bedgood rush. TSW would score a field goal to cut the lead and Tyler Simmons would return an interception for a TD to give the Titans a 20-14 lead to the locker room. Two field goals were the only scoring in the 2nd half as the Titans held on to win 26-14.

Key Players

Khari Jones, QB, Blacksburg Ballers

- Last time around, the Ballers relied heavily on the pass as the rushing game stalled. Although the running game has since improved, look for the Ballers to still capitalize on the pass due to mismatches in the secondary. Khari has had a frustrating time at QB, although completing for the most yards last season in the Western conference, Khari's accuracy and interceptions have been a cause of doubt in the league. It doesn't help matters when he opens the first game with 2 interceptions but did manage to complete 33 of 48 passes. Khari will need to be very accurate and precise in this game because the Ballers can not afford turnovers this team does have a few ball hawks at CB

The Blacksburg Receivers

- The Fab Five of Blacksburg have the potential to have themselves a field day against this Titan defense. The Titans defense lacks depth and the Ballers play with a very frequent rotation so you should see very many fresh WRs and very tired CBs. This should result in a lot of big gains and a lot of big TD's!

Tommy Canada, DE, Blacksburg Ballers

- The running game for TSW also stalled last time they met the Ballers and the rushing game was atrocious against Ottawa with 35 yards on 28 carries. With the Ballers d-line, it is likely that this situation will continue so its up to Tommy Canada to put extra pressure on Brady Kiel, who should be throwing the ball frequently and this will force him to make mistakes which could lead to many Ballers itnerceptions.

Gordon D'Arcy and Beast Baily, CB's, Blacksburg Ballers

- TSW is set to pass the ball and these two ball hawks have the potential to make the big plays and change the tide of the game. Both of them had an excellent start to the season and will look to continue their turnover ways in week #2.

Tyler Simmons, LB, TSW Titans

- Tyler Simmons may be the one player that can keep TSW in the game. Although he was very silent in the last time these two met, Tyler had a big game in week #1 with 3 tackles, 2 for a loss, a hurry and an interception for a TD. Simmons has the potential to shut down the HB and the TE and could possibly see another interception so look for Khari to throw away from him.

Brady Kiel, QB, TSW Titans

- Brady is a talented QB but he will need to be better than perfect against this Ballers defense. Brady went 30 for 43 for 267.5 yards and a TD and had no interceptions thrown against the Ottawa Chiefs. If he can open the score, the Titans might have a shot at this.

Recap

The Ballers looked very good in week #1 and this is due to intense training during the offseason as well as some key additions to the team. It's very likely that this greatness will continue in week #2 as the team really starts to get clicking. The Titans have a solid lineup but they just might not be good enough for both the Ballers offfense and the defense.

Ballers Break Curse 51-7

BLACKSBURG (BP) -- Owner Mike has finally done it. His first opening day win as an owner came today after a 51-7 blowout against the North American NDL'ers.

"It feels great," Owner Mike said who had lost his previous 2 openers, the first against the Phoenixville Kings in his first game as an owner and last season against the Thunder Bay Storm 21-10. "The win certainly brings a different mindset for the season. The past 2 years we've had to play catch-up and this season we're able to breathe easier, and attack rather than being forced into must win situations."

Mike's team played one of its best games in team history. Led by star QB Khari Jones and newly acquired RB Jesse Lumsden, the Ballers were able to put on a show offensively. Jones threw for 286 yds and 3 TD's and Lumsden had 100.5 yds rushing as well as a receiving and rushing TD.

"It feels great to start the season on the right foot," RB Jesse Lumsden said who was acquired this off-season from the San Jose Spartans. "I told the coaching staff that if I get my opportunity to start I will make the most of it. I'm really pleased that I didn't disappoint and that our whole team executed and played well."

The Ballers certainly did execute. They were able to convert their opportunities in the red zone into points and make the most out of drives, something that plagued them all last season.
"Last season it was tough to punch it in," WR Ballhogg Irwin-Owens said who had 5 catches for 25.5 yds. "We moved the ball and we were able to get some things going, but we were just not able to get points out of drives. This season I think we are coming in with a new mentality and having more playmakers definitely helps."

And the Ballers certainly had a lot of playmakers show up today. WR Ryan Betesta debuted as a Baller catching 6 passes for 85.5 yds and a score. In addition, defensively the Ballers had the same results they did last season. They were able to force turnovers and make key stops when it mattered.

"We were just able to confuse them with a lot of our schemes," Defensive end Speed McLovin said who abused the NDLer's offensive line with a sack, 2 tackles for loss, and 2 hurries. "We matched up well and were able to use not only our physical ability but some nice blitz packages to get pressure. Great job all around, I have to commend everyone on the team."

The pressure also forced the NDL'ers to throw 3 INT's. Including an interception for new starting CB gordon d'arcy who was just promoted before the game.

"It feels great that the coaching staff has enough confidence in me to start me at cornerback," d'arcy said who finished with an interception and a fumble recovery. "Usually I'm known as a kick return specialist, but this off-season I've been working more and more at corner. I thought that they would gradually work me into the new role I have on pass defense, but the coaches all said that they wanted to see me start and I'm glad I didn't disappoint."

The Ballers certainly didn't disappoint today, and will look ahead to their next game against the TSW Titans. The Titans won their first game today 26-14 against the Ottawa Chiefs, however are still a rebuilding team. They posted a 6-10 record last year and still have numerous holes to fill on their team. With that said they have some excellent team chemistry and could surprise everyone with a well played game.

The Blacksburg Press would also like to announce that it will be awarding a game ball to the player it feels had their best game and impacted the team the most. The game ball today goes to DE Speed McLoving. McLovin had a sack, 2 tackles for loss, and 2 hurries. Excellent performance Speed and on behalf of the Blacksburg Press we congratulate you!

Game Preview: Week #1 Blacksburg Ballers @ North American NDLers

Blacksburg Ballers (Season 2 - 10-6)
@
North American NDLers (Season 2 - 9-7)

After their second straight early exit from the playoffs, the Blacksburg Ballers return to the gridiron with a vengeance. The Ballers finished their second season with a playoff loss to the Thunder Bay Storm and for a much improved team, this was a hard way to finish the season. The Ballers regrouped and went to the mattresses and came back with an abundance of free agent signings. The additions of these new signings should turn Blacksburg into a threat and one of the top teams in the Western Conference. The road starts with the North American NDLers who are coming off their first season in the AAA, a 9-7 tour that ended with an embarassing 50-0 loss to the Yukon Gold Rush in the first round. This team is also hungry to get back their pride and are looking to take out their frustrations on the Ballers.

Season 2 Rewind

The last contest between the Ballers and NDLers took place in week 5 of season 2. It was an aerial contest that showed the excellence that are these two quarterbacks. The NDLers would open the scoring first with a TD pass from David Ricco to AJ Alves early in the second quarter. Khari would march down the field the very next drive and hit a strike to Mark Bryne in the endzone to take a 7-6 lead. Riccio would answer right back with a touchdown pass to Ichiro Backwards and take a 13-7 lead to the locker room. The NDLers would come out swinging in the 2nd half with the 2nd TD reception for AJ Alves on the half's opening drive. Khari would press a little too hard in the 4th and was picked off. This would lead to a NDLers field goal. Khari would push again, scoring a late TD to Sterling Driver but it was too little too late for the Ballers who would go on to lose 23-14. That was one of David Riccio's best games of the year, completing 33 of 50 passes for 253 yards and 3 TD's (a season high). Khari didn't do too bad himself completing 27 of 47 for 229 yards and 2 TDs but one interception. The running game was practically non-existant and the Ballers are hoping to open up both areas of the offense in order to avenge this loss.

Returning Cast

The Ballers have seen a large portion of the team return from last season. Some notable returns are the Owens, as well as Bo Szilaj, Pincthat Nuggetout, Michael Beasley, Russell Roch, most of the offensive line and almost the entire defense!

Speed McLovin', DE

- The Ballers MVP of Season 2 is back and hungry for more in his third season in Blacksburg. After a stellar performance that saw 92 tackles, 11 sacks and 8 pass deflections, what does McLovin' have in store for season 3 as he leads the Ballers defense to battle?

Khari Jones, QB

- No surprise here! Khari Jones is in for the long haul. Khari improved on his season 1 numbers in season 2 with a Western Conference high 3,499 passing yards coupled with 22 TD's but only completing 59.1% of his passes and throwing 17 interceptions. Khari was a pro bowl finalist but pundants prodded at his interceptions and completion percentage as a glaring weakness in this young QB. Khari saw a lot of personnel change in the receiving corps in season 2 and with the new additions to this years receiving corps, it is likely that these numbers will be going sky high as the Ballers should produce some of the top passing numbers in the league. Khari had a career best performance in week 14 recording 383.5 yards and 6 touchdown passes.

Aaron Wilson, LB

- A late addition to the Ballers roster in season 1, Wilson had an outstanding performance at LOLB recording 82 tackles, 1 sack, 2 interceptions and 10 pass deflections. With fellow linebacker Michael Beasley, these two should be a double threat against every team in the league in season 3.

Troy Westwood, K

- Quite possibly the turnaround story of Season 2, Troy Westwood rebounded after the season 1 first round playoff loss where the Ballers lost 17-16 and Westwood missed a 19 yard field goal. Troy finished season 2 with 31/41 field goals and 44/48 XPM but the fascinating part is that Troy has made his last 20 in a row including 4 from over 50 yards. Troy has vowed to make season 3 his year and have one of the best completion percentages in the league.

Beast Baily, CB

- Beast is coming off a fine performance that saw him record 46 tackles, 9 interceptions and one that came back for a touchdown. This ball hawk is hunting for more in season 3.

Movers and Shakers

The offseason was full of moves and a lot of free agent signings but a few players were lost and picked up in the trading game:

- Alex Casino (Running Back) is probably the most notable player lost in trade but he is being replaced by the much needed Elite Rusher who will be starting at DT.

- Samual T. Bonecrusher (Center) joins us after being traded from the Houston Toros for Steve Belange (C)

- Google Dog (OT) was exchanged to the Paris Musketeers for Von Tierre (OT)

- Slasher Evans (CB) and Lawrence Julius Taylor (LB) join the team from the Clemson Tigers which saw the departure of Graz Manius, Sargent Pepper and Anthony Davinson.

- No Longer with the Team: Todd Rollman, Kellen Edwards, Dan Etheridge and Lauf Wunder have all been traded away for cash negotiations.

Making Their Debut

Being the first game of the season, many new players will suit up for the first time in the Ballers uniforms and the fans are in for quite a treat.

Ryan Betesta, WR

- Quite possibly the biggest free agent signing in Ballers history, Ryan Betesta joins the team following the disbanding of USA AAA #1's Gilroy Devils. Betesta suited up in 16 games for them last season receiving 172 catches for 1,921 yards (a league high), 14 TD's and a 120.1 yards per game average. "Mr.First Down" is known for his shenigans but he can deliver on the field and is the right man to lead this receiving corps to the promised land.

John Wilson, WR

- The second addition to the receiving team is no stranger to Canadian AAA ball, John Wilson suited up for the Moose Island Sofa Kings in 9 games last year. Wilson has been juggled around and played for 5 teams in season 2, finishing with 552.5 receiving yards and 2 TD's. Wilson hopes to have found his fit in the Ballers offense and with the Owens twins and Bo Szilaj, this is a receiving team that will be a force to be reckoned with.

Tommy Canada, DE

- Tommy Canada played for the 14-2 Boston Stalkers in the USA AA #2 in season 2, racking up 30 tackles and 1 pass deflection. After failing to resign a contract there, Blacksburg was quick to sign the up and coming young talent and hopes that he can be the yin to Speed McLovin's yang.

Elite Rusher, DT

- Acquired in a trade with the Brentwood Bears for Alex Casino, Elite Rusher will be the starting DT and after recording 25 tackles and 1 sack in season 2, Elite Rusher is hoping to record a few more sacks and pummel opposing QBs.

Jesse Lumsden, HB

- Jesse Lumsden joins us by way of the USA Pro League's San Jose Spartans. Lumsden played backup HB to Johnathan Stewart and ran the ball for 371.5 yards and 6 TDs as well as 21 receptions for 136.5 yards and 1 receiving TD. Lumsden saw the bulk of his yards on special teams including 1,402 yards on kickoff returns, 1,304.5 yards on punt returns including 1 for a TD. Lumsden is itching to be a starter and prove how dominant he can be.

Von Tierre, OT

- Von Tierre played in Paris for season 2 and an exchange with the Ballers for Google Dog will see the OT who recorded 46 pancakes come play for Blacksburg.

Lawrence Julius Taylor, LB and Slasher Evans, CB

- Its not easy playing for a losing team, Evans and Taylor played for the 0-16 Clemson Tigers. Taylor is hoping to see better success in season 3 after recording 92 tackles, 4 sacks and 5 pass deflections in season 2. Same thing for Evans who recorded 85 tackles and 3 interceptions.

BJ, TE

- The second player to join the Ballers from the Gilroy Devils is TE BJ. BJ is the starting TE and saw 4 TDs in season 2 and 351 yards through the air. He is a big guy who isn't afraid to put his body on the line.

Silent Earth, SS

- The final debut and also joining us from the Gilroy Devils is SS Silent Earth. Earth played in 16 games for the Devils recording 75 tackles, 1 interception and an amazing 32 pass deflections. A first round playoff loss for Gilroy also has these three former Devils riled up and ready to hit the gridiron running.

Summary

The Ballers have a lot to prove and definitely have some high expectations after making some big offseason moves. This will be a difficult first test but will allow the Ballers to prove their worth to the league with a victory. The road to Canada Pro starts tomorrow and the Ballers are fired up and ready to go!

Ballers Continue Active Off-Season

BLACKSBURG (BP) -- The Blacksburg Ballers, coming off their most successful season as a franchise posting a 10-6 record and a playoff appearance, have dived into the off-season head first gobbling up as much talent as they can trying to improve for the upcoming season. They have added a lot of new talent that they are hoping will be the foundation for a successful future.

"It has been a great first few days," Owner Mike said. "The coaching staff has done a lot of evaluations and we are just trying to get as much talent as we can. I think so far we have improved this team by at least 3 or 4 wins over last year just by the talent we've gotten."

Owner Mike's optimistic outlook doesn't come as a surprise. For one he has added a bunch of players to help fill out an already talented roster including HB Jesse Lumsden, FB Frank Davis, OT Von Tierre, TE BJ, WR's John Wilson and Ryan Betesta, DE Tommy Canada, DT Big Daddy Hawkeye, LB Lawrence Julius Taylor, CB Slasher Evans, and SS Silent Earth.

"I'm really excited to play for the Ballers," OT Von Tierre said. "They are a well known team around the league and I think I will fit right in."

Tierre came via trade this off-season for former starting OT Google Dog. Coming by way of trade as well was CB Slasher Evans. Evans told the Blacksburg Press it's a really great opportunity to play for the Ballers.

"The team has a great atmosphere and everyone seems very cordial. I think they keep in mind that not only is it a business, but there's also the player aspect you have to keep in mind."
In total the Ballers have signed or traded for 11 players, and have some more new players on the way as well director of player scouting and GM rbetesta said.

"We do have a few more moves we are looking at. The team is certainly a contender right now, but I think if we can add a few more big playmakers to this team we will move from a contender to a championship caliber team which is ultimately our main goal we've been looking at all off-season."

The Ballers will have to definitely compete with some of the best competition there is. The Canadian AAA #2 is one of the toughest leagues in all of the Goal Line Blitz football association and there is no doubting the talent on teams like the Reading Redskins or Arctic Bay Yetis.

"This is why I came here," SS Silent Earth told the Blacksburg Press. "I want to play at a high level and that's what I'll be doing this coming season. I don't want to see us giving it 50 [percent], I don't want us giving it 80 [percent]. All I gotta say is get your popcorn ready."

And certainly the Ballers will be providing extra butter and salt this coming season with new exciting acquisitions and a newly renovated stadium.

Ballers Bowl Receives Renovations

BLACKSBURG (BP) -- In a press conference today outside the gorgeous Blacksburg Bowl, Owner Mike drove the first hammer into the ground commencing one of the largest renovations in Blacksburg history.

The plan for the new renovations are to add 2 new corner seating areas that will accommodate upwards of 4,000 new seats. The successful season this past year coupled with Owner Mike's optimism for the future prompted this decision. Both sections have been rumored to cost upwards of $2 million for construction and even more for labor. However the cost is worth it Mike told the Blacksburg Press.

"Honestly you get to a point where the team is growing so fast and expansion is the only answer. We recently finished our most successful season in team history and had our best attendance showing ever. To accommodate for new fans and the team spirit around Blacksburg, I think it's only fitting we try and bring more people to the stadium."

With the new renovations the Blacksburg Bowl will now be home to more than 14,000 seats and 1000 club seats. Prospective season ticket holders should rejoice because new seats will be available to purchase for the entire year. In addition the seats add a new corner viewing area that should provide an interesting angle for fans to see.

"It looks like a great project," QB Khari Jones told the Blacksburg Press. "As long as we keep expanding that means more fans to the stadium and more Ballers fever. I haven't seen any of the plans yet, but it appears to be going really great so far."

The Ballers will continue construction all though the off-season and the new seats will be ready for opening day.
