Mid-Season Awards

BLACKSBURG (BP) -- The Blacksburg Press has been on a hiatus for a while with many of this year's games not getting recapped. We can assure you though that our activity will increase once September rolls around, our editor has decided to take some unannounced vacations unfortunately.

However this edition of the Press is to discuss the mid-season award winners for the Ballers. While it is a little over mid-way through the season with 9 games being played, the 6-3 Ballers have plenty of things to be proud of. For one they are 4th in the Western Conference in Canada Pro, their first season here. They have a winning record in a very tough league. And they have a lot of standout players on the team who have improved immensely. So here are the winners:

MVP: QB, Khari Jones

Jones has once again anchored the Ballers offense this season and has now eclipsed the 20 TD mark for the 3rd consecutive season. He has come a long way since his arrival in season 1 and has even managed to improve upon his MVP caliber Pro Bowl winning season last year. He has a QB rating of 97.9 which is over 10 points higher than last year's mark.

Offensive Player of the Year: WR, Ryan Betesta

While Jones may be the MVP there is no denying that Betesta deserves the OPOY. He is 7th in the league in yards with 756.5, 7th in TD's with 6, and 7th in receptions with 61. If this were a stat line for a receiver after a 16 week season we would say they had a great year. But this is only 9 games into the season and Betesta is on track to improve on his Pro Bowl season last year.

Defensive Player of the Year: DE, derek pacheco

While everyone is talking about standout DE Speed McLovin who has made headlines as one of the best players in the Canada Leagues, they forgot about the guy who plays opposite him derek pacheco. Coming into this year pacheco was mainly used as a spot starter splitting time with Michael Young History at the RE. However after only tallying 4 sacks in his 3 years as a Baller, he now has 18 for the year. He started out the year with a great game against the Yukon Gold Rush with 2 sacks and hasn't looked back. pacheco is now a serious Pro Bowl consideration and on Canada Pro's DPOY watch.

Rookie of the Year: WR, James Vita

When we say rookie we don't mean a first year player, we mean someone who is new to the Ballers. Vita came over in an off-season trade that sent WR's John Wilson and Bo Szilaj for him. Since the trade Vita has had a tremendous season with the Ballers and has been a prime target for QB Khari Jones. He has 41 receptions, 503 yds, and 4 TD's through 9 games this season. However this isn't a major surprise, Vita caught 107 balls last year and 94 the previous year.

Most Improved: DE, derek pacheco

A no brainer here. pacheco only recorded 4 sacks in his first 3 years as a Baller. Now as a full time starter he has 18, through 9 games. It's difficult to predict how many sacks pacheco will have at season's end because he consistently shows up to play and is constantly improving himself.

Sportsmanship Award: CB, Beast Baily

Baily has consistently exhibited excellent sportsmanship on and off the field. He is always the first to congratulate guys on the Ballers for great plays or give advice. He is also the type of player to be first in line for shaking hands with the other team. Baily has been one of the leaders of the Ballers defense along with Speed McLovin and both have given their time and effort in spending time to educate young players about sportsmanship.

Congrats to all the players who received awards and even to the players who did not, because without everyone the Ballers would not be a dominate team. Look out for a few things at the end of the year. The Blacksburg Press may be inducting a few of its players into the Blacksburg Ring of Fame and a few jerseys maybe retired.

Ballers Have Some Fun in the Sun

HONOLULU, HI - If I had told you the Ballers lost two days ago, it wouldn't seem all that believable after watching the spectacle that was the Blacksburg Ballers this afternoon. Everyone was relaxed and both sides of the ball looked to be on perfect cue as the Ballers got back to their winning ways with a 59-24 dominating victory over the Hawaiian Hoyas.

"It feels good to be back on form and this team is truly at its peak form right now and the offense is just going out there and clicking and getting things done. Not to take away anything from the defense though, they sure showed up today and played a helluva game as well and when we combine our two forces, you have an unstoppable football team," QB Khari Jones.

The Ballers did look unstoppable today racking up 555 yards total with 472 of those through the air, a new club record. As well, the Ballers scored 8 times, 4 rushing touchdowns and 4 passing touchdowns and were never forced to punt at all. The Ballers defense gave up just under 400 yards with just over 300 coming in the air but also forced 4 interceptions (1 by Michael Silver, 1 by Jonathan Evans, 1 by Speed McLovin' and 1 by Mr McKelvin) as well as 5 sacks including 4 by Derek Pacheco.

The Hoyas striked first on the opening drive with a 13.5 yard touchdown pass but Khari led the troops marching going 6/7 before finding Dirk Ilicious in the endzone for the 8 yard game tying touchdown. Toby Cavalier would get picked off for the first time on the next drive by Jonathan Evans and the Ballers offense took charge again. A big fourth down conversion kept the drive going as Pinchthat Nuggetout rushed in for the 3-yard score.

2 drives later and Khari would find Dirk Ilicious again for the 50 yard score and another interception and a Russell Roch score would put the Ballers up 28-7. The Hoyas would manage to close the gap with a touchdown pass and a field goal to go down 28-17 at the half.

Khari would immediately get to work in the 2nd half with a big 31 yard touchdown pass to Chris Barlow, his first as a Baller. Cavalier would give up the ball again with a big return by Mr McKelvin but the Ballers would half to settle for their only field goal of the game.

The Hoyas would score once more in between Ballers scores by FB Russell Roch but it wouldn't be enough as the Ballers would add another touchdown pass, #4 in the game for Khari Jones to James Vita and close out the game 59-24.

The Ballers receiving team looked on cue today with both Betesta and Vita going over 100 yards and Dirk Ilicious cashing in two scores. Newcomer Landon Swifty looked good in his debut with 3 catches for 38.5 yards and looks to be a force to be reckoned with.

The Ballers now head back home to host the Victoria Admirals and hope to start winning more games at home. The Admirals have not had a very good start to their season with a 2-4 record and their only victories coming against the last place Manitoba Maniacs and the BC Beerfest.

Game Balls

Offense - You can't speak any louder than broken records and Khari Jones set a new club record for most passing yards in a game with 472 yards. Add this to his 4 touchdown passes and no interceptions and you have an obvious choice for game ball.

Defense - Nothing strikes fear in a QB like being brought down by a big defensive linemen and so far this season, no one has done it better than Derek Pacheco recording 4 sacks today and 1 hurry.

Ballers Trade TD Owens to Richey Royals

HONOLULU, HI - The Ballers will see a new face in the receiving corps this afternoon after TouchdownsOnly Owens was traded this afternoon to the Richey Royals. This trade comes just weeks after Ballhogg-Irwins Owens and marks the departure of team scout, Wylie Cowboy.

During his tenure, TouchdownsOnly Owens caught roughly 100 passes for just over 1,200 yards including 10 touchdowns. TD posted his best numbers in season 3, his only full season as a Baller, posting 743 yards and 7 touchdowns in the Ballers undefeated season. He was off to a similiar start this season with 215.5 yards and 1 touchdown.

TD requested the trade following a fallout with OC Ryan Betesta following the trade of John Wilson and Bo Szilaj for James Vita. TD was opposed to losing Wilson who posted stellar numbers in season 3 but the coaching staff went through with it anyways. *The preceding paragraph is untrue and added for dramatic effect.*

In return, the Ballers welcome WR Landon Swifty from the Richey Royals of the USA AA #3 league. Its a short week for Swifty who played his last game yesterday in a 41-24 victory over San Diego. Swifty was kept off the scoreboard recording 0 receptions while playing 26 plays. Swifty is hoping the change will do him good as he has only recorded 5 receptions this season for 43.5 yards and no touchdowns.

Swifty played 3 seasons for the Richey Royals bringing in 85 catches for 852.5 yards and 3 touchdowns. Swifty has also returned 71 punts with one of them being brought back all the way back for a score.

QB Khari Jones is looking forward to the change and welcomes Landon with open arms.

"It's tough to lose a great guy like TD Owens but problems on and off the field have hampered the chemistry of this great receiving corps and I wish him the best in what he does. Landon looks like a promising young prospect with a lot of speed and hopefully we can bring him into the mix very quickly." - QB Khari Jones.

Swifty will make his debut this afternoon as the Ballers look to get back on a track with a victory over the Hawaiian Hoyas.

Ballers Run Out of Ammo in Wild-West Shootout

BLACKSBURG, VA - Its been a tough season so far at home for the Blacksburg Ballers after being given their second loss of the season at home once again, this time to the Drinkin' Hellraisers. The Ballers faithful aren't used to losing at home after going 11-1 at home last season (including playoff games) but the future has to remain optimistic for this young team entering its first season in the Canadian Pro League.

"It's frustrating, we'll give it that but the boys have nothing to be ashamed of. This is a talented football club that is in its 3rd year in the CPL. We played them in season 1 in the playoffs and lost by a single and we came back today and proved that we belong here in the CPL." Offensive Co-Ordinator Ryan Betesta.

The Ballers have proven that they can hang with the big boys of AAA past losing to the Yukon Gold Rush by 7 and then tonight by 9 to the Drinkin' Hellraisers in a last minute come from behind victory.

The good news is that the Ballers offense is really starting to come together with Khari Jones posting a season high 392.5 yards through the air with 3 touchdowns and unfortunately, the last minute interception to end the hopes. This is the first time in Khari's career that he has posted back to back 110+ QB ratings and this is in part to the excellent job by the receivers today. Ryan Betesta hauled in 13 catches for 136 yards and James Vita had 7 for 112.5 and a 59.5 yard tocuhdown catch. Dirk Ilicious and BJ would add the other two scores.

The offense would have a few moments of trouble, the Khari Jones interception as well as two fumbles would change the momentum for the Hellraisers who only turned the ball over once, an interception by Beast Baily. The Ballers would take a one point lead early in the 4th but a quick TD strike by Max Schenavar would pull the Hellraisers in front and Khari's interception would seal the deal.

The defense had its share of troubles all day long as Max Schenavar sliced them through the air for 455 yards and 4 touchdowns. An interception by Beast Baily would momentarily change the momentum but Max was just too unstoppable. The run defense came to play though holding them to 74 yards but it would prove to not be enough.

The Ballers now drop to 6th place in this tough portion of the schedule and will now take a quick trip to Hawaii to take on the Hoyas in an effort to rebound. With today's performance, Khari Jones has moved into 4th place in the CPL for passing yards. It is important to note that he has surpassed Jamarcus Fitzgerald of the Yetis and is on pace to break last seasons records if his play continues.

Game Ball: For being the field general that he is and leading this team to almost 400 yards in the air, it is an obvious choice to go with QB Khari Jones for his performance today.

Ballers Return to Form as they Trump Calgary 38-21

CALGARY, AB - It only took two bad games to get it through to Khari Jones and company that something needed to be done if they looked to stay competitive in the Canadian Pro leagues. With some extra practice sessions this week, Jones worked through the playbook several times with the offense and every extra minute paid off this afternoon in the battle with the Calgary Warriors.

Jones has been ridiculed by critics as a "one season wonder" and that last season was a fluke but those critics...they all got fired today. Khari led an offensive assault right from the get go and looked the best he has all season. The game started with an 8 play opening drive in which Khari went 5 for 5 and finished it off with a 5 yard strike to James Vita.

"It felt good to go out there and get the monkey off our back. Its always great to pull ahead early because it puts the pressure on them to make up ground," QB Khari Jones.

Troy Westwood would add a field goal in the 2nd and Khari would throw his 2nd TD of the game, a 17.5 yard strike to BJ to take a 17-0 lead. With under 2 minutes to go in the first half, the Ballers would score their only rushing touchdown of the game by Russell Roch to take a 24-0 lead that they thought would take into the locker room.

A long kickoff return followed by a couple of quick strikes ending in a 12 yard pass by Adrian Viking would put the Warriors on the board as time expired at the half.

The Warriors would continue this momentum going into the 3rd scoring another touchdown by Viking to narrow the gap to 10. The Ballers would give up another passing touchdown in the 4th and it looked like the Warriors might make a comeback with 3 minutes remaining until Adrian Viking was picked off by Mr McKelvin who ran it back for the score.

"It was truly amazing! They were marching and poised to score and I jumped up there and hit the ground running for my life and didn't even look back once," Mr McKelvin.

The Ballers defense forced problems for Adrian Viking all day long as Derek Pacheco recorded 3 sacks (for 7 total on the season) and Speed McLovin' added 2 sacks and 3 tackles for losses. This on top of the interception for a touchdown, as well as another interception by Michael Silver and a forced fumble by Aaron Wilson. The defense also held the rushing game to 35 yards on the ground.

The Ballers offense got the ball back shortly after and marched the field again as Khari found Betesta in the endzone for his 3rd touchdown of the game and a 17 point lead.

Khari would finish the game 29/43 for 309.5 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions, the first time he has done so this season.

The Ballers looked much better than last week although almost giving up their big lead in the second half. The Ballers will now face their toughest test of the season as they host the 4-0 Drinkin' Hellraisers in a AAA rematch.

Game Ball: There were a lot of strong performances but the one that really stands out is Mr McKelvin. With time dying down and Calgary getting within striking distance, McKelvin picks the ball off and takes it for the score to seal the game. McKelvin also had 4 tackles, 2 for a loss and a pass deflection.

Game Preview: Week #3 Manitoba Maniacs @ Blacksburg Ballers

Manitoba Maniacs (0-2)
@
Blacksburg Ballers (1-1)

The Ballers return home after their first Pro victory, a decisive 24-0 shutout victory over the Fraggle Rock Death Squad as the offense looked good and the defense continued to look even better allowing just 175.5 total yards which is 1 yard less than the Ballers running backs. Russell Roch scored twice and Khari found Betesta for his only touchdown pass of the game as the Ballers cruised to victory. Despite an 0-2 record, the Manitoba Maniacs are a team that no one can take lightly because they do have an effecient offense which has just not kicked into gear yet but could happen at anytime. The defense... not so much. The defense has already allowed 71 points this season in just two games and this has to have Khari Jones and company foaming at the mouth.

The Maniacs Season Thus Far...

The Maniacs kicked off the season in B.C. against the Beerfest who finished season 3 with a 6-10 record. This game got as ugly as it could as the BC Beerfest looked alright, scoring 31 points and putting up over 325 yards of offense but also fumbled the ball 6 times, losing 3 of them. The Maniacs weren't able to capitalize on this, giving up 2 interceptions of their own and also fumbling twice. The Beerfest would score three times on the ground and once in the air while holding the Maniacs to one score of each on route to a 31-17 victory.

Week #2, fresh off a hard-fought victory against the Blacksburg Ballers, the Yukon Gold Rush were poised to prove that they deserved that win and came out swinging against the Maniacs and ended up with a grand slam. The Gold Rush turned the ball over 4 times but still managed to put up 370 yards rushing and 133 yards through the air for over 500 yards of total offense. All this while holding the Maniacs to 200 yards, 26 on the ground and forcing no turnovers. The Gold Rush scored two touchdowns in the air and four rushing touchdowns as they easily walked away with a 40-13 victory.

Manitoba Connections

There are several Manitoba connections on the sidelines of the Blacksburg Ballers which could make for an interesting rivalry down the line.

- Offensive Co-Ordinator Ryan Betesta Sr. and Wide Receiver Ryan Betesta are both long-time residents of Winnipeg, Manitoba with Betesta being born and raised in Winnipeg and attending the University of Manitoba.

- Kicker Troy Westwood hails from Dauphin, Manitoba and spent many years with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers prior to joining the Ballers.

- Other former Blue Bombers include Quarterback Khari Jones and TE Jamie Stoddard; Stoddard also attended the University of Winnipeg prior to playing for the Bombers.

Season 4 Standouts

CB Beast Baily - 2nd for tackles with 11 as well as 8 PD's, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

SS Silent Earth - Leads the Ballers in tackles with 13 and has 4 PDs as well.

DE Derek Pacheco - The only Baller with a sack, and two for that matter, as well as 1 hurry.

FB Russell Roch - The Ballers touchdown leader with 2 also has 33 yards rushing and 3 broken tackles.

Turn Up the Heat

WR James Vita - a 2 for 1 trade deal brought Vita here and the risk is starting to pay off nicely as Vita led the way in week #2 with 6 catches for 67 yards. Vita took what Khari gave him and had a standout performance for a team that has been struggling to move the ball through the air.

HB Jesse Lumsden - After only rushing for 26.5 yards in week #1, Lumdsen cranked up the heat churning out 91 yards with 4 broken tackles including some key 3rd down conversions to keep the chains moving. After giving up 375 yards on the ground in week #2, the Manitoba Maniacs have to hope that Lumsden won't be putting up those kind of numbers.

QB Khari Jones - Somebody has to put Khari into a big oven somewhere and heat him up cause his performance so far has not been what we're used to seeing. Granted, not many QBs are performing up their potential at this time, even Jamarcus Fitzgerald of the Yetis. Jamarcus has thrown for over 500 yards but only has a 57% completion rate and has thrown 5 interceptions while only throwing 1 touchdown. Khari's new targets have yet to feel the love that Khari was spreading last year and when they do, this team will be very hard to beat.

The Ballers look to continue their momentum and improve on their offense against a Maniacs team that is looking for vengeance after giving up 500 yards of offense last week. The Ballers are set to hit a hard bump in their schedule with games coming up against Calgary, Drinkin' and the Hawaiian Hoyas and can use every little bit of momentum that they can get.

Ballers Post first Pro Win with 24-0 Shutout

FRAGGLE ROCK (BP) -- After a hearbreaking opening season loss to the Yukon Gold Rush 14-7, the Blacksburg Ballers came into today's game pumped and ready to play. And were they ever ready, with a 24-0 dominating performance against the Fraggle Rock Death Squad. The punishing defense and impressive offensive performance by the Ballers helped them earn their first Canada Pro victory.

"It feels like a weight off your shoulders," FB Russell Roch said who led the Ballers with 2 rushing scores. "The whole year there's been speculation that we can only win in the lower leagues. But obviously you saw in week 1 we can hang with the big time teams and now we can say we can beat Pro teams too."

The Ballers certainly had a "Pro" performance this afternoon. Gaining an impressive 374.5 total yds of offense as well as churning out 176.5 rushing yds.

Star running back Jesse Lumsden had 91 yds on 23 carries and Russell Roch had 2 bruising touchdown scores. Roch has now been promoted to most of the Ballers short yardage plays after an impressive season last year which saw him score 12 rushing touchdowns.

The offensive line also improved their play.

They had a dismal performance last week against the Yukon Gold Rush in which they gave up 6 hurries, 4 sacks, and could only manage to pave the way for 24 total rushing yds. However following an inspirational pep talk during practice on Monday by offensive coordinator Ryan Betesta Sr., the line was able to hold their own today. Only giving up 1 sack and paving the way for over 170 total rushing yds.

"It feels great for us to have that type of performance," OT Fatty McMuffin said who has stepped up this season as the leader of the offensive line. "We played together as a 5 man unit and not 5 men divided like last week. As long as we continue our performance we'll win more games."

The same could not be said however for the passing game.

QB Khari Jones who has been criticized by the media in the past for his sporadic play, is once again being questioned as the starting QB of the team. Newspapers such as the Blacksburg Post have called him "erratic at best" and ESPN Senior CPL Analyst Chris Mortensen said "he's not efficient enough to be in this league."

Jones didn't finish with awful numbers, but they were not what Blacksburg was expecting. He only completed 21 of 40 passes for 198 yds 1 TD and 1 INT. Thus far for the season he has yet to go over a QB rating of 73 and has not passed for over 200 yds despite averaging 36 attempts per game.

"I've seen the criticism from all of those guys," Jones said who has been reluctant to answer the questions raised about his ability. "I can't do anything about what a paper writes I just got to play, you know. So when I see stuff written by Chris [Mortensen] and the [Blacksburg] Post I just take it as a challenge instead of getting worked up. I will say it's been difficult with some of the new defensive formations I've seen and throwing to a couple new guys. Just keep the faith and I think you'll see me return to back to the Khari Jones of last season."

The Blacksburg defense however has stayed the same, which is a good thing for the Ballers. Ranked as one of the top defenses last year in AAA #2, the Ballers have not missed a step. Last week holding the high powered Gold Rush offense to 7 points and now this week shutting out the Death Squad.

The Ballers actually had more team rushing yds than the Death Squad had total yds, with 176.5 rushing yds for the Ballers and 175 team yds for the Death Squad.

"The whole squad is just doing phenomenal," CB Beast Baily said who had 7 passes defended and 9 tackles. "The chemistry and willingness of guys to learn has really helped. I'm especially impressed by our new interior lineman and the play of our linebackers. They have really stepped up to the challenge and delivered."

The Ballers next week will have yet another challenge they will need to step up to. A home game against the Manitoba Maniacs who come in at 0-2 and 13th in the CPL Western Conference. This is no cakewalk as there have been a few upsets already in CPL action so the Ballers will have to stay hot on their toes.

*****************************

Game Ball: FB Russell Roch

The short yardage monster. A reincarnation of William "the Refrigerator" Perry. Whatever you want to call him the guy is a stud. He will break your bones if he is in his path to the endzone and he proved that twice today. Finishing with 6 carries for 28.5 yds and 2 TD's. Congragulations Russell and all of the Ballers, keep up the solid play!

Game Preview: Week #2 Blacksburg Ballers @ Fraggle Rock Death Squad

Blacksburg Ballers (0-1)
@
Fraggle Rock Death Squad (0-1)

The 4th season of the Canadian Pro League is under way and neither of these two teams started off the way they wanted with both of them dropping their first game of the season. The newly promoted Blacksburg Ballers proved that they belong here by holding their own against the Yukon Gold Rush and losing a tight match, 14-7. The Fraggle Rock Death Squad have a new look to them with many new players since last season but were still unsuccessful in week #1, losing 34-7 to the North Delta Huskies.

The teams do battle this week with one team picking up their first win of the year. Khari Jones and company look to improve on their struggling offense who had a hard time against the Yukon Gold Rush and walk away with their first Pro Victory.

Week #1

A fired-up Ballers squad gave it their all and put up a good fight against the Yukon Gold Rush in week #1. The defense held the Gold Rush to 277 yards with only 2 scores while forcing 3 fumbles and an interception. The offense had its share of troubles though only compiling 24 yards on the ground, 181 in the air and 1 score while turning over the ball once. Pressure from the d-line would cause Khari and the running backs trouble all day long and would put them in unfavourable positions as the Gold Rush squeaked by with a 14-7 victory.

Fraggle Rock’s new look team was not looking good in week #1 against the North Delta Huskies giving up 4 passing touchdowns in the first half and a rushing touchdown in the 2nd half to seal the deal. The North Delta QB’s combined for 301.5 yards in the air while being sacked 4 times and throwing a pick. Fraggle Rock had trouble moving the ball completing 25 passes for only 145 yards with another 85.5 yards added on 39 rushes. The Death Squad would only find the endzone once as they lost 34-7.

Players to Watch

Ryan Betesta, WR, Blacksburg – After receiving for over 1,400 yards last season, it came as a shock to many that Betesta only caught two balls last game for 15 yards (his 2nd lowest amount in his career). Betesta is fired up and ready to take it to the air and is famous for the long distance reception.

Derek Pacheco, DE, Blacksburg – 2 sacks against Yukon was a might feat for Derek Pacheco and he has certainly come into his own in the past few weeks. He’s already half way to his season high total of 4 sacks and with 15 games still to go, Derek may be turning some heads this season.

Khari Jones, QB, Blacksburg – A lackluster performance against a tough Yukon team can easily be erased in the minds of many if Khari Jones comes out and performs the way he is supposed to. With the addition of two new threats this year (Dirk Ilicious and James Vita), the passing game should’ve come easier to Khari but in the first game of the year, Khari looked almost lost without Ballhogg and another of his favorite targets, John Wilson.

The Ballers are looking to right the wrongs of the first game and prove that they belong here in the Pro’s. While there is little doubt to how good this team really is, two losses in a row will be very alarming to a team that is slated to return to the playoffs for a 4th straight season. The coaches have been busy all week working out the kinks of the new playbook and they have the boys ready to put up a helluva fight.

Game Preview: The "Back in Blacksburg" Campaign Kicks Off

Yukon Gold Rush (0-0)
@
Blacksburg Ballers (0-0)

BLACKSBURG, VA - The fans in Blacksburg will be rocking to AC/DC when the Ballers make their entrance onto the field for tomorrow's game. The season 4 marketing campaign "Back in Blacksburg" has hit the Blacksburg airwaves showing season 4 highlights to AC/DC's "Back in Black". The campaign focuses on 3 key things: the return of many Baller veterans, the hopes of more home playoff games and the return of another Western Conference championship to the city of Blacksburg. Offense Co-Ordinator Ryan Betesta Sr. is very excited at what this season has in store.

"The video and the song sums everything up. This is our season once again and we really hope to bring another championship home. Many of the boys from last season have returned and that will definitely be instrumental to the success of our team in season 4. We're in a new league, with new obstacles, but we'll take it to the field every game with a solid effort and make the most of every opportunity." Ryan Betesta Sr.

The Ballers will unveil their season 4 home uniforms on Sunday afternoon comprised of the maroon, burnt orange and black (replacing the white) to go with the theme for season 4. This is the 5th set of Ballers jerseys to be released. They have the regular home/away jerseys, as well as the special Canada Day red and white jerseys and also the 16-0 undefeated season special commerorative edition jerseys that the Ballers wore in the playoffs last season.

The new marketing campaign coupled with the success of season 3 has jampacked the much expanded Ballers Bowl and the Ballers have already sold out all the games for the regular season. The Ballers Bowl saw a major overhaul this season and now sits at a capacity of 38,720 and the place will be rocking each and every home game.

They don't get much bigger and better than week #1 as the season 2 AAA Western Conference Champs, the Yukon Gold Rush, are set to do battle with the season 3 AAA Western Conference Champs, the Blacksburg Ballers. Coming off their first season in the Canadian Pro League, the Yukon Gold Rush are looking to improve on their success of last season where they lost the first two games of the season before going 14-2 and making it to the Western Championship Finals, only to lose to the Moose Jaw Fighting Hobos who went on to win the League. The Ballers enter the Pros after going undefeated in the regular season before losing in the AAA league finals to the Arctic Bay Yetis. Sparks are sure to fly as these two teams meet at a higher level.

The Preseason

The Ballers have had an impressive showing this preseason defeating the 16-0 OOTP Ballers who won the AAA #1 Western Conference Championships and then followed it up with a 177-0 slaughter of the Miami Energy. The defense has looked good and the offense has continued to score when needed, although the passing game has not looked as great as last season.

The Yukon Gold Rush have looked equally impressive defeating the Arctic Bay Yetis 48-26 and then followed it up with a 17-3 victory over the Carol City Cartel. QB Jacob Stuart has looked mighty impressive in both outings and will look to continue his ways against the Ballers.

The History So Far...

The Ballers met the Yukon Gold Rush halfway through the second season. The Yukon Gold Rush's offense was too much to handle for the Ballers defense scoring a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown in each the 2nd and the 3rd quarter taking a 28-0 lead to the 4th. The Ballers rushing game would struggle all game long only amounting to 29 yards as well as 3 fumbles. Khari would find Sterling Driver twice in the endzone in the 4th to cut the lead to 14 but it would be too little too late. Khari had an impressive game throwing for 267.5 yards on 64 pass attempts, 38 of which were completed.

The Returning Cast

The Ballers have seen much of their season 3 roster returning to the sidelines as well as a who's who of AAA greatness including 13 Pro Bowlers (including newcomer Jonathon Starr) and Western Conference Offensive MVP Khari Jones. The only Pro Bowler not to return is kick returner and wide receiver Ballhogg Irwin-Owens who was traded to the Rwanda Royal Knights for DT Demonic Lily. Owens duties will be taken over by long-time Baller Gordon D'arcy.

The Dearly Departed

Although much of the roster looks the same, a few trades and releases have occurred over the offseason and the roster has been slightly bulked and then trimmed.

Making Their Debut

Being week #1 of the regular season, many of the new additions will be making their regular season debut as a Baller.

WR James Vita - A two for one deal with the Texas Bigga Bois (Wilson and Szilaj) brings Vita to Blacksburg where he has made an immediate impact in the preseason, 11 receptions and 3 touchdowns have proven that Vita is a very nice compliment to Ryan Betesta as a #2 WR.

WR Chris Barlow - After spending last season with the North By Gawd Texas Tornado Humpers, Chris Barlow was picked up the Ballers. Barlow had a great showing against the Miami Energy scoring twice on 4 receptions.

TE Dirk Ilicious - After having a breakout season last year with the London Knights, Dirk was looking for bigger and better things and was excited about the opportunity to join the Ballers. A speedy receiving TE, Ilicious has yet to be able to make a strong impact yet, with all of the TE's rarely seeing passes in the first two games. Khari has been working on new patterns with the receiving team and should incorporate Dirk into this explosive passing attack.

OT Henry George and Josh Pushman - The fall of the Saskatoon Raiders saw a big, and we mean big, signing for the Blacksburg Ballers picking up both OT's Henry George and Josh Pushman. This is a big addition for the Ballers o-line who will now be able to protect Khari more so than ever.

DT's Demonic Lily, Mike Flores, Ucantru Noverthis, Jonathon Starr - A trade for Ballhogg Irwin-Owens brings Demonic Lily to the d-line while the other three were brought over by free agency. Jonathon Starr, a season 3 pro bowler with the Abbotsford Miners, is familiar to this Ballers team who never lost to the Abbotsford Miners. This dominating D-line will look to continue to shut down the run with these new additions. These 4 combined for 10 sacks against the Miami Energy in preseason game #2 and will make a big impact on the field this year.

LB Bryce Rotzell - Free agent Rotzell joined the team early in the offseason and had a big impact in game #2 forcing 2 fumbles and returning another fumble back for a touchdown. This is on top of his 10 tackles.

LB Billy Joe Mandibal - A trade between the Dallas Destroyers saw Billy Joe Mandibal join the Ballers for Kaiser Soyze and CB Marlin Jackson. Mandibal will be a big addition as the team switches to the 3-4 defense.

CBs Robin Caze, Mr McKelvin and Johnathan Evans - With Marlin Jackson and Slasher Evans gone, the Ballers have done some mighty recruiting and trading bringing in Caze, McKelvin and Evans to help out D'arcy and Beast Baily, the only returning Ballers CBs.

SS Icky Thump - With the retirement of Dinkin Joens, Icky Thump has stepped in to take his spot and had a mighty big performance in game #1 forcing a crucial turnover as the Ballers edged out OOTP 17-16.

P Shia Lebouf - A familiar face to Canadian ball, Shia played for the Vancouver Darksiders before taking over from the injured Mr. Man this offseason.

Return to Grace

Khari Jones is looking to return to his last season form after struggling to get over 50% in both of the preseason games. Although throwing 10 touchdowns and running one in, Khari has not looked as impressive this preseason, despite the newest additions in the receiving team. Perhaps its the chemistry changes with the new players or the new routes that the team has been running or the stiffer competition in the Pros but Khari is looking to improve and be one of the top QBs in the Pro leagues.

The Ballers may have their toughest test of the season in week #1 and it will be a real good chance to prove how good of a team they really are. With the pundits expecting them to finish 5th in the conference, the pressure is on for this team who has never missed the playoffs to go out there and prove them wrong and once again bring a home playoff game back to Blacksburg. The road to the championship starts in week #1 and the Ballers are looking to strike gold when they host Yukon.
