Ballers Win Decisively 30-16
"We just played great and made the most of our chances," CB Beast Baily said who had an INT return for a TD. "I just jumped on the ball and made a play. Nothing to it really, just reading the QB and making the play after the INT."
Baily finished with 6 tackles, 3 passes defended, and an 83 yard INT return for a TD. The offense sputtered a bit, but still had a solid effort from QB Khari Jones.
"Sometimes it's not all about making that 90 TD bomb," Jones said. "Some games you'll have big plays, but today I needed to play a different role as a game manager."
Jones had a mistake free day, throwing for 170 yds 1 TD and not INT's. Another interesting aspect of the game was the fact that there were no substitutions for the Blacksburg offensive line.
"When you're hungry you don't want to leave the game," C Bricky Bonebreaker told the BP. "You feel like you want to knock the [expletive] out of somebody."
The Ballers next opponent will be the Moose Knuckle Island Sofa Kings who will come in undefeated at 2-0.
*Game ball goes to Beast Baily. Fabulous INT return for a TD and great job to everyone else!*

Ballers Lose Opener 21-10
"We gave up some key plays to them and the ball seemed to bounce their way," Blacksburg LB Aaron Wilson said referring to the 13 yd TD tipped by S Bill Clinton. "Overall I think the team played better than what the score reflected, but we just need to come back next week playing more aggressively."
The Ballers mustered only 21.5 rushing yds while Thunder Bay racked up 114.5. Leading rusher Dan Etheridge could not find much running room, only gaining 13 yds on 8 carries.
"It was very tough finding running room today," RB Dan Etheridge said. "Holes just closed up and things just didn't develop for us. I think next game we should have a bit more success on the ground."
Despite the poor rushing effort, the Ballers threw for 226.5 yds through the air and QB Khari Jones opened the season with a 1 TD effort that came in the 3rd quarter. Jones told the press he liked what the offense did.
"We had some nice drives going, but I think what we need to do is get that running game going. Dan [Etheridge] had a tough time finding anything and I don't think it's anyones fault its just that to Thunder Bay's credit they played excellent."
The Ballers however were not perfect. They had 3 turnovers in the game, 2 fumbles and 1 interception. And Thundery Bay only had 1 turnover on an interception by Oscar Michael Jordan Robertson. Head coach Mike told the press he doesn't like the mistakes the team made.
"They were foolish mistakes and if you're going to play in this league you can't do that. Thunder Bay capitalized on their opportunities and made the most of them. We did not and next game we'll just have to secure the ball and be more careful."
The Ballers next game is on Tuesday at the Forumopolis Fighting Llamas. The Llamas come in 1-0 after a 10-3 win over the TSW Titans.
*The game ball will go to Chuy Miller for his 11 tackle, 2 tackle for loss, 1 pass defended effort. Nice game Chuy and everyone else!*

Ballers Lose 17-16 in Close Battle
But that was not the Blackburg locker room.
Instead the Ballers hungtheir heads after a close 17-16 loss to the number 1 seeded Drinkin Hellraisers. The silence in the Ballers locker room was so palpable that you could cut a knife through it. Players packed up their things and headed home in disappointment despite a very successful season.
"It's just very hard to think about the game right now," Exhausted QB Khari Jones said after a 328 yard 1 TD performance. "When you lose a game like we did going down to the wire, it's really tough."
The Ballers fought the whole game with the Hellraisers who were heavy favorites. A 1st quarter TD by Hellraisers QB Dan Cox to star receiver John Wilson gave them a 7-0 lead. After a field goal trade off the Ballers only trailed 10-6 at the half.
However a Michelin Man 7 yard TD score by the Hellraisers brought the lead to 17-6. The Ballers then had a spectacular 44.5 yard TD catch by Sterling Driver and a Troy Westwood FG that brought the game within 1. However the Ballers could not score again and the Hellraisers sealed victory.
The Ballers only allowed 58.5 yards rushing and got good pressure on Dan Cox forcing him to an interception and 2 hurries. Speed McLovin' provided constant pressure from the end but said in the end the team just needs to look forward to next season.
"I know guys are disappointed that the season didn't end up the way we wanted it to, but in the end you can't play the 'what if' game. Saying 'what if' this or 'what if' that isn't going to change the outcome. I think next year is what we need to focus on because you have seen that this team can easily compete against the best.
Looking forward to next season the Ballers do have a lot of very good backups that could command starting positions elsewhere.
"The talent that this team has is definitely going to garner some interest from other teams," Owner Mike said. "It's obvious that teams needing to build their talent are going to look for teams that are successful. Unfortunately we have guys on the roster who have a legitimate shot at starting on a lot of very good teams and we're going to have to let them go."
Despite this he went on to say that there is also a lot of talent on the team that they can keep and this will be to their advantage because teams will "underestimate the level [they] can play at."
In spite of the loss, Blacksburg is looking to a bright future that includes many more playoff appearances. They pulled off a stunning 4 game winning streak that catapulted them into the playoff race, they almost beat the number 1 seeded team in the Canadian AA Western Conference, and they have a roster that is full of talent. Next year fans should be in for a treat because folks from what we've seen throughout this season there is nowhere to go but up.

Season 1 Player Awards
BLACKSBURG, Virginia (BP) -- The Blacksburg Ballers have finished a season that included a playoff berth and huge contributions from key players in all positions. To honor these players the Blackburg Press has a few awards to give out:
Offensive Player of the Year - RB, Dan Etheridge
Etheridge brought a tenacity to a once struggling running game. With the arrival of key offensive lineman and Etheridge he exploded for an excellent season with over 400 yds and 3 TD's. Etheridge won multiple game balls and catapulted an offense that at times struggled.
Defensive Player of the Year - CB, Beast Baily
Baily may not have been the flashiest player on the field but he was definitely one of the most valuable. Racking up 11 passes defended, 1 forced fumble, and 24 tackles Baily was a stellar corner that shut down each team's leading receiver.
Special Teams Player of the Year - K, Troy Westwood
Despite having ups and downs during the year, Westwood is remembered for his overtime kick against Mt. Oread which helped Blacksburg get to the playoffs. Westwood has been improving week by week and has established himself as one of the premier kickers in the Canadian AA.
Built Ford Tough Hustle Player of the Year - QB, Khari Jones
Jones battled constant pressure from tenacious defenses in the Canada AA and threw for over 2000 yds and 6 TD's. He was one of the locker room leaders and rallied the team numerous times on and off the field.
Best Hair - LB, Michael Beasley
Is it a fro? Is it something else? Only Beasley can tell you. His hair is one of the most unique masterpieces ever created and puts even Michaelangelo's Sistine Chapel to shame.
Best Swag - LB, Chuy Miller
Miller took the field like Denzel in Training Day. A little rough on the edges but you knew the guy had swag like American Gangster.
Best Name - CB, Oscar Michael Jordan Robertson
When you have the greatest basketball player of all time and one of the most versatile players in the game all in your name, you've got one hell of a signature.
MVP - QB, Khari Jones
Stats don't lie, but leadership doesn't either and that's what Jones had to help lead the Ballers to the playoffs. He threw one of the best balls in the game and helped the team win 4 straight at one point. His leadership skills and his ability to help jump start the offense is why he is here.

Ballers lose Closer 16-9, but Make Playoffs
DE Speed McLovin' told the BP that he knows this team is better than what it showed this afternoon. "People don't realize the dedication that players have to this team. Guys like Khari, Dan, Sterling, Alex, Bricky, Jacob, and all of them on the offense put forth so much time and effort that it's really frustrating when the media has so much negativity to them."
The offense only mustered 16 points and Khari Jones had 2 interceptions. Jones finished with 186.5 yds and 0 TD's.
"It's tough when you play a team as good as Reading," Jones said. "We were going into this game really hyped about the chances we had, and unfortunately we didn't convert. I think you'll see that this offense will be in much better form when we play in the playoffs."
The Ballers jumped out to a 9-7 lead at halftime. However 3 field goals by the Redskins in the 4th quarter sealed the victory for them.
The Ballers next task is facing off against the Drinkin Hellraisers. As the 8th seed and last team in the playoff bracket, the Ballers must play the 1st seeded Hellraisers. The 13-3 Hellraisers have won 7 of their last 8 games and are 1st place in the Canadian AA Western Conference.
Despite being heavy underdogs LB Chuy Miller gave a candid expression of why he isn't worried.
"Why should I be worried? We are THE Blacksburg Ballers, we are THE team to beat, and nobody is going to tell me any different."

Ballers beat Devils 21-7, Cling to Playoff Hopes
The Ballers jumped out to a 7 point lead after a Khari Jones 9.5 yd TD pass to Mark Byrne. They then scored TD's in the 2nd and 3rd quarter that widened the gap to a 21 point lead. Only a late Chilliwick TD rush kept the Ballers from achieving a shutout.
"The defense played superb once again and I commend the guys for putting all their heart into that game," said defensive coordinator Kage. "We really have executed to perfection over the last 4 games and I think in the playoffs we're going to make some noise if we keep it up."
The Ballers have given up a grand total of 24 points in the last 4 games and that is one of the main reasons they have won 4 straight. Another integral part to their success though is the resurgence of QB Khari Jones, but today Jones had a tough outing throwing 3 interceptions to the Devils defense.
"It was a tough outing and their defense certainly made some plays," Jones told the BP. "Sometimes you have games like this where things just aren't clicking, but what you have to do is just learn from the mistakes and move on."
To Jones's credit he threw for 194 yds, had a 65 completion %, and had 1 TD. Despite Jones's off game, the Ballers' ground game churned out yard after yard, producing a whopping 183.5 yds. Alex Casino and Dan Etheridge each had a TD and both carried the ball extremely effectively, rushing for a combined 135 yds.
"We just took the holes that the offensive line gave us and burst through them," backup RB Alex Casino said. "The offensive line played superb and we just took advantage of the opportunities given to us."
The Ballers' newest addition LB Aaron Wilson, lived up to the hype surrounding himself recording 2 TFL and 2 PD.
"The Ballers just have a great atmosphere around their stadium and the locker room," Wilson described. "Going out there and playing was definitely a rejuvenating experience and I'm glad I could make an impact."
After reports surfaced that Pac-Man Jones, Michael Vick, and Wilson were running illegal squirrel cage matches, all 3 players were suspended from their respected teams. Wilson was granted a buyout and owner Mike took a chance.
"We were aware of the magnitude of the charges being brought against Aaron," Mike told the BP. "We knew that he was no longer involved or connected to the illegal activity he engaged in. The only thing we are concerned with is that he will make an impact on the field."
The Ballers will face the Reading Redskins in a battle for a playoff position. With 3 teams at 8-7 records and 1 team at 8-6-1 there is a possibility that the Ballers could miss the playoffs if they lose and those teams win.
However, C Jacob Moore doesn't want to think about that.
"PLAYOFFS? We're talking about PLAYOFFS? I just hope we can win that game, then we can start talking about playoffs."
Khari the Ferrari Set to Dance with the Devils
With their latest victory, a 10-7 nail-biter, Khari moved into 6th place in the Canadian AA league for passing yards with 1,635 yards having played in less games than the top 5. Khari has suited up and been credited for 10 games but has only actually played in 8 games, having been benched in his final 2 games as a Mexican Hitman. Here is the stats for Khari since joining the Blacksburg
Ballers:
Week 9 - vs Phoenixville Kings, 24-13 Loss - 38 of 71 (54%), 349.5 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Week 10 - vs Alberta Stunners, 27-10 Win - 15 of 29 (51.7%), 179.5 yards, 1 TD and 0 INTs
Week 11 - Niagara Knights, 20-16 Loss - 23 of 33 (69.7%), 169 yards, 0 TDs and 0 INTs
Week 12 - vs Thunder Bay Storm, 20-3 Victory - 26 of 48(54.2%), 204.5 yards, 0 TDS and 1 INT
Week 13 - vs Sudbury Spurs, 26-7 Victory - 22 of 44 (50%), 178 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT
Week 14 - vs Mt Oread Ball Hawks, 10-7 Victory - 27 of 46 (58.7%), 207.5 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT
His last game, being his best game, against one of the top defenses in the league. His total combined stats for his time in Blacksburg are 151 completed passes on 271 attempts for a completion percentage of 55.7% (having never fallen below 50% in a game all season), 1288 yards, averaging 215 yards a game with 4 TDs and 4 INTs. It's this last stat that has Ballers fans worried but Khari says that its nothing to fear.
"The team is scoring points when it has to, either by air, by land or by D. I certainly would like to throw it in there a few more times but that will come with time. For now, we just need to worry about winning football games," Khari commented.
Its this consistency that has earned Khari the nickname "the Ferrarri" because he truly is the fine-tuned engine of this well-oiled machine that is the Ballers football squad.
The Ballers take the field today with a chance to secure a playoff spot and Khari has nothing but high expectations on the outcome of this afternoon's game.
"We are ready for this! We were born for this! Today, I'm putting that ball in the endzone multiple times and our boys are the only ones that are going to catch it!" a fired up Khari issued.
Care to dance with the Devils in the pale moonlight? Khari does and he says it will be hell even for the Devils. Stay tuned Ballers fans, the engine is revving, sparks could fly!

Ballers Squeak by Hawk Stars in OT 10-7
GOOGLE DOG told the BP he has always believed in this team.
"Really I am not surprised by our performance over the last 3 weeks. The offense was always talented and the defense is one of the best in the league, really it was just a matter of all the gears coming together."
The Ballers certainly have all the gears coming together and showed once again they can win despite not putting up gaudy numbers. Khari Jones did return to form and he told the BP how it feels to be back.
"Well after a few weeks of our passing game being off track, I think we made some great strides to help remedy that situation. All of our receivers played great, Sterling caught some tough balls and Gordon made a great pass in the end zone there at the end. So I think as long as we just keep mixing in some run and pass we'll have success offensively."
Jones went 27 for 46, 207.5 yds and a touchdown that came on a 7 yard strike to TE Gordon Abram. The Ballers then were faced with a touchdown by the Hawk Stars after Justin King was inches away from picking off a Bill Whittemore pass. After the score remained 7-7 at the end of regulation the Ballers marched down the field and Troy Westwood nailed a 36.5 yd field goal to win it.
"I just put my leg into it and the thing went straight," Westwood said describing the last minute heroics. "Snap was great, hold was great, and the ball just hit off my foot cleanly. I will definitely think about this moment for the rest of my life."
Westwood will need to kick more FG's as the Ballers face 2 more regular season opponents, the Chilliwack Devils and Reading Redskins, followed by the Canadian AA League playoffs. The Ballers are currently seeded 7th and have a record of 8-6.
"We just need to calm down focus on the 2 games we have left and then look to the playoffs," Defensive Coordinator Kage said. "Our defense has been really stepping up and I am impressed by the them and the whole team. But we have 2 more opponents who are not going to just lay down and let us win, we still need to finish strong and carry that momentum to the playoffs."
Kage was named the Michelin Tires Defensive Coach of the Week after holding teams to a combined 17 points over the last 3 games.
Next week the Ballers will face the 6-8 12th place Chilliwick Devils. The Ballers could move even further in the standing with a win next week.
Gameday - Mt. Oread vs Blacksburg
"Well the situation right now is that we need to win plain and simple," Owner Mike told the BP. "If we win then we keep our playoff spot, if we don't we will not. Playing the what if game will not happen because our team will finish out strong a secure a position in the playoffs."
Mike was optimistic about the team's chances this afternoon despite facing a very potent offense and staunch defense. The Hawk Stars have a cumulative 57% completion for their QB's. They also lead the league in defense and are the only team that has allowed less than 2000 total yards.
Khari Jones wasn't worried though. "We realize that this team is very talented and that they can get stops, but the thing that puts the Ballers apart from all the other teams is that we keep drives alive. We also change up our offenses so if one thing isn't working then we'll try something else and we have the talent and capabilities on the coaching staff to do that. I feel we can win this game and climb the playoff ladder even higher"
Jones has had a bit of a slump lately and realizes it.
"I know that a few games I haven't put up spectacular numbers, but what counts is managing the game. And I feel out of everyone in this league I am the best at it."
Khari and the rest of the Ballers will have that tested today as they face the 8-5 Mt. Oread Hawk Stars. With a win today Blacksburg could move into the 7th spot with a Mt. Oread loss or could be bumped out of the playoffs entirely if they lose this game and will have an uphill climb the rest of the season.

Ballers Blast Spurs 26-7
"We just came out and played to our strengths," RB Dan Etheridge told the Blacksburg Press.
"The running game worked real well today and our defense played great. Those guys are always putting their all into it."
Etheridge had his best game as a Baller chalking up 79.5 yds on 16 carries as well as a 3 yard plunge for a TD in the 2nd.
"We started out strong and never looked back," Said LB Michael Beasley. "After going up 17 in the 1st I think all the guys were pumped. But I was really impressed how even though we had the lead we never let them come back."
Beasley had one of his best games of his career. Recording 5 tackles including an interception in which he leaped in front of Philipp Puchner's intended pass and returned it for 10 yards.
"Yeah I mean after that interception I had to go off on the sideline and get some oxygen. I didn't anticipate having to work that hard to get 10 yards."
Despite the win, offensive coordinator rbetesta was not happy with the offensive line.
"We still have some work to do against opposing teams' front 4. Our guys just got tired out there and took plays off which you can't do. Khari was hurried 7 times and that can't happen especially down the stretch when we have to really protect the pocket."
Blacksburg is 5th in Canada AA with most hurries against with 39. However they are also 4th in the league in least amount of sacks allowed with 1. So not is all bleak for the offensive line.
With Thunder Bay's loss this afternoon, Blacksburg has moved into the 8th spot in the playoff race. The Ballers will play current 7th spot holder, the Mt. Oread Hawk Stars on Tuesday. With a win in that game the Ballers could solidify a spot in the playoffs and a win the following week would more than likely seal it.
Ballers on Edge of Playoffs
"We don't want to underestimate any team," Said QB Khari Jones. "We just want to go out and execute like we did last week."
The Ballers face on of the most menacing pass defenses in the league only allowing 7 TD's while also picking off 13 passes. In addition they have hurried the QB 44 times and kept opponents under 180 yds through the air.
"We realize that Sudbury has the capabilities to stop anyone in the league," Said offensive coordinator rbetesta. "As a team though the key to beating these guys is getting off the routes faster than they can and managing to get that extra half a yard for a 1st down and keeping drives alive."
The Ballers will be coming into this game 6-6 and Sudbury at 7-5. The Ballers could conceivably jump into the playoffs with a win and losses by Thunder Bay, Yukon, and Mt. Oread.

Blacksburg Pummels Thunder Bay 20-3
"Everything was clicking and we just executed to perfection," Said Blacksburg linebacker Michael Beasley who had 4 tackles in the game. "It was great to see us finally wrapping up and making those tackles we needed to make."
The game started slow with both teams managing to stop each other's offenses. At halftime the Ballers held the slim lead, 6-3.
"It was really a tough fight in the first half," QB Khari Jones told reporters. "I was really getting a lot of pressure all game, but I definitely commend our line for holding up under those conditions."
Jones finished 26 for 48 with 205 yds and 1 int.
Blacksburg however pulled ahead in the 3rd and 4th quarters scoring a touchdown in each. First on a 3 yard scamper by RB Alex Casino and then on an 11 TD pass from Tom Mason to Anthony Davinson.
"I think the whole team showed that we can play with the big guys in the league and that records really don't show the true character of who you are," LB Chuy Miller emphatically told the Blacksburg Press. "It really isn't about the individual performer, but about the team effort and I think we've really been coming together to form a great bond."
Up next the Ballers play the Sudbury Spurs who are 7-5. In order to stay in the playoff hunt
Blacksburg will have another must win situation as they are on the cusp of the Canadian AA playoffs.
Owner Mike has also asked the Blacksburg Press to issue this statement to his team:
"You guys played excellent out there and the effort you showed was impeccable. As always I award the game ball to the player who showed the best performance on the field as a player and a leader. This week I want to congratulate Chuy Miller as this weeks winner. He exemplified character, class, and an excellent individual performance. Thanks guys and good luck next week."
Khari Set to Let It Rain
"I took a couple of steps to the side, threw the ball up there and then just got rocked from the lineman. I got the wind knocked out of me and just wasn't feeling good for the next few minutes," Khari commented.
Don't worry Ballers fans, Khari is going to be playing in today's game against the Thunder Bay Storm and not only that, he is more fired up then ever.
"People have a lot of expectations about me being here and they want me to take this team to the promised land and I can tell you that it's coming, just sit back and relax. As for us and the Thunder Bay Storm, there is a storm coming and it's the Khari Jones air attack and we're going to let it pour on this Thunder Bay defense. Remember my debut against Phoenixville, one of the top teams in the league? I let it pour with 350 yards passing and I plan to do it again to TB but this time, we're going to connect for TD's and bring home the win."
Khari better bring in the TD's if he expects to win because in his 3 games, Jones has only connected for 2 TD's. The shining light is that for a team with so many problems with INTs (having thrown 15 as a whole), Khari has only thrown one of those and that was in the loss to Phoenixville. The stats don't add up to the negative results that the Ballers have been seeing. Jones has thrown the ball 133 times, completing 76 of those for a 57 completion percentage, 700 yards with 2 TD's and 1 INT and no sacks which is a credit to his outstanding offensive line.
Khari is coming off his best outing so far in the 20-16 loss to Niagara having completed 23/33 passes for 170 yards but no TD's. Khari and the team will have to be spot on, and healthy, if they want to get by Thunder Bay and keep the playoff hopes alive but Khari has complete faith in the team.
"I don't want to guarantee a victory because that's too much pressure to live up to but if this team comes together and plays like we've been playing in the past couple of games, we can beat anyone in this league. It's time to live up to the hype. Bring your umbrella's because we're going to make it rain on the Storm's parade!"

Blacksburg Looking at Must Win
BLACKSBURG, Virginia (BP) -- The Blacksburg Ballers face off Friday in a must win situation against the Thundery Bay Storm. Coming in at 5-6, the Ballers lost a close game Wednesday against the 5th place Niagra Knights. The Ballers lost a 10 point first quarter lead and let fatigue get the best of them. This week the Storm will be another tough divisional opponent as they must face one of the league's best offensive lines and quarterbacks.
"We need to focus on keeping the guys in shape and ready to play," Blacksburg coach and owner Mike told the Blacksburg Press. "The game last week was just a case of our guys getting tired and we made some crucial mistakes"
Crucial mistakes they were. The Ballers had 2 late interceptions by both of their backup QB's with Khari Jones on the bench due to fatigue. In the previous games Mike had praised Khari's ability to handle the pressure and fatigue calling his performances "harrowing" and "what we need on this team".
With 8 teams making the playoffs in the Canada AA Western Conference, the Ballers have some work to do as they currently own the 10th spot. They are also 4th in the league with 15 interceptions thrown and 1st in the league in TD's given up with 14.
When asked about the staggering statistics Mike said, "The stats don't lie. I can't spin this any other way then we really need to work harder to keep our mistakes down and our defense solid."
We asked QB Khari Jones about the 15 interceptions and explained, "It really isn't Mike's fault or anyone's fault individually. The team has to come together to form a cohesive unit."
This week the Ballers will face a staunch Thunder Bay defense that is allowing only 169.8 yards per game. They have also harassed opposing QB's hurrying them for a total of 34 times this season.
"It's really not surprising what they've done. We've scouted this team over and over, and we know what that defense is capable of in its front 4," Blackburg Offensive Coordinator rbetesta explained. "We're just going to have to wear them down with the run and get a rythym going with Khari and the offense."
Blacksburg will have to win this match up otherwise they could tumble as far as the 13th spot in the western conference with only 4 games left to redeem themselves.
