BLACKSBURG (BP) -- The Blacksburg Ballers today achieved their first win in 2 games after a decisive 27-6 blowout of the Sudbury Spurs. The game featured a newfound offensive gameplan by the Ballers and a stout Blacksburg defense that gave up only 181.5 yds.
"It was really a change from our recent philosophies," Head Coach Mike said regarding the team's overwhelming use of the run. "We saw that the last 2 games we played we abandoned the run and as a result were unsuccessful. The coaching staff and I saw this trend and we decided to put more of an emphasis on our ground game."
And the plan worked to perfection. The Ballers amassed a staggering 160 yds on the ground led by RB Alex Casino. Casino had 62.5 yds and 2 TD's on 17 carries. Pinchthat Nuggetout, Dan Etheridge, and Russell Roch also pitched in for a combined 20 carries on 96.5 yds.
"It was really a great effort by everyone," RB Alex Casino said. "The offensive line has to get a lot of credit. They really won the battle up front and helped the backs find the holes easier and just burst through."
The Ballers's offensive line churned out another successful day blocking for 160 rushing yds, no sacks, and 7 pancakes.
The Ballers defense faired just as well as the offense. The Spurs were only able to gain 181.5 yds and were held to 6 points.
"The whole defense just stepped it up and delivered," CB Oscar Michael Jordan Robertson said. "It's great when you have a defense that works together as well as we do and makes some tremendous plays."
The defense provided not only constant pressure on the Sudbury QB's and a tough front 7 that stopped runners in their tracks, but also put 7 points on the board. Safety Sargent Pepper made a great play on the ball and made an INT for a TD.
"Really...was....a....great......play", Pepper said panting after the game following the 41 yard scamper. "I....think....our.....defense.....did......great."
The Ballers's next opponent will be the San Francisco Sucka Free's. The Sucka Free's come in at 2-7 and 13th place in the Canadian AAA #2 Western Conference.
*Today's game ball will go to LB Aaron Wilson. Aaron had a great game with 11 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. Great job guys and let's win one again next week!*
