BLACKSBURG (BP) - 21,260 fans erupted this afternoon on the first play of the game after the kickoff today. Why you may ask? John Morton of the Abbotsford Miners threw the ball for the first time and it landed in the arms of cornerback Beast Baily. That would set the tone for much of the afternoon as the Ballers would intercept the ball three times on route to a 27-10 victory over the Abbotsford Miners.
"Normally it takes a couple plays to get the jitters and emotions out but I just saw my opportunity and took advantage of it and I don't think I've ever been in a stadium so loud as when I caught that ball, the fans just went nuts!" Beast Baily tells the press.
The very next drive would have similiar consequences for Morton and company as he would throw the ball into the arms of defensive end Speed McLovin', McLovin's 2nd interception in as many weeks. The big DE would also force the ball to the ground twice but the Ballers were unable to recover the fumbles.
"Wilson said it best last week when he said we were hungry for turnovers, and if we were hungry, today we are full from that buffet," McLovin' jokingly told the press.
The Ballers turnover machine now has 12 interceptions on the season and has only allowed an average of 6.66 points a game. This one would turn out to be one of the toughest ones from them giving up 10 points, 38.5 yards on the ground and 264.5 yards in the air, most of which can be attributed to new CB Teddy Martinez.
"It's all my fault, last night I was out partying with my boyfriend and he wanted me to get dirty with him. I knew I shouldn't have cause I twisted my neck pretty hard and its pretty stiff today...but not as stiff as him," Teddy Martinez smirked as everyone ackwardly looked at him.
The Ballers can confirm that immediately following today's contest, Martinez was traded to the Madrid Stags despite his 1 interception and 10 blown coverages. Martinez will be replaced by new CB, Marlin Jackson. Martinez will not be sorely missed.
The Ballers offense also came to play today as Khari Jones posted one of his best completion percentages ever going 28/40 (70%) with one TD and no interceptions. He connected early in the third with John Wilson for a 32 yard touchdown. Most of the scoring though would be done by Jesse Lumsden who ran the ball in twice. Lumsden would finish with 57 yards on the day.
"This certainly isn't the way I want to score touchdowns. These aren't even mine, I didn't deserve these. Other guys did all the work and I feel like I'm stealing touchdowns from them. I am glad that I was able to punch them in because I'd hate to have to settle for field goals again," A humble Lumsden said.
The Ballers next stop is in Brutal for a date with the Deluxe. The Deluxe are the Canadian AA #3 Western Conference champs and have faired quite well so far in AAA. They have beaten the Ottawa Chiefs and the TSW Titans and their only loss comes at the hands of the Saskatoon Raiders. This should be the Ballers first test since week #1 and a good warm-up for the match against Mooresville.
Today's game ball goes to the man that helped carry the load at CB with 12 tackles, 1 pass deflection and the game starting interception, the one and only Beast Baily!
