HONOLULU, HI - If I had told you the Ballers lost two days ago, it wouldn't seem all that believable after watching the spectacle that was the Blacksburg Ballers this afternoon. Everyone was relaxed and both sides of the ball looked to be on perfect cue as the Ballers got back to their winning ways with a 59-24 dominating victory over the Hawaiian Hoyas.
"It feels good to be back on form and this team is truly at its peak form right now and the offense is just going out there and clicking and getting things done. Not to take away anything from the defense though, they sure showed up today and played a helluva game as well and when we combine our two forces, you have an unstoppable football team," QB Khari Jones.
The Ballers did look unstoppable today racking up 555 yards total with 472 of those through the air, a new club record. As well, the Ballers scored 8 times, 4 rushing touchdowns and 4 passing touchdowns and were never forced to punt at all. The Ballers defense gave up just under 400 yards with just over 300 coming in the air but also forced 4 interceptions (1 by Michael Silver, 1 by Jonathan Evans, 1 by Speed McLovin' and 1 by Mr McKelvin) as well as 5 sacks including 4 by Derek Pacheco.
The Hoyas striked first on the opening drive with a 13.5 yard touchdown pass but Khari led the troops marching going 6/7 before finding Dirk Ilicious in the endzone for the 8 yard game tying touchdown. Toby Cavalier would get picked off for the first time on the next drive by Jonathan Evans and the Ballers offense took charge again. A big fourth down conversion kept the drive going as Pinchthat Nuggetout rushed in for the 3-yard score.
2 drives later and Khari would find Dirk Ilicious again for the 50 yard score and another interception and a Russell Roch score would put the Ballers up 28-7. The Hoyas would manage to close the gap with a touchdown pass and a field goal to go down 28-17 at the half.
Khari would immediately get to work in the 2nd half with a big 31 yard touchdown pass to Chris Barlow, his first as a Baller. Cavalier would give up the ball again with a big return by Mr McKelvin but the Ballers would half to settle for their only field goal of the game.
The Hoyas would score once more in between Ballers scores by FB Russell Roch but it wouldn't be enough as the Ballers would add another touchdown pass, #4 in the game for Khari Jones to James Vita and close out the game 59-24.
The Ballers receiving team looked on cue today with both Betesta and Vita going over 100 yards and Dirk Ilicious cashing in two scores. Newcomer Landon Swifty looked good in his debut with 3 catches for 38.5 yards and looks to be a force to be reckoned with.
The Ballers now head back home to host the Victoria Admirals and hope to start winning more games at home. The Admirals have not had a very good start to their season with a 2-4 record and their only victories coming against the last place Manitoba Maniacs and the BC Beerfest.
Game Balls
Offense - You can't speak any louder than broken records and Khari Jones set a new club record for most passing yards in a game with 472 yards. Add this to his 4 touchdown passes and no interceptions and you have an obvious choice for game ball.
Defense - Nothing strikes fear in a QB like being brought down by a big defensive linemen and so far this season, no one has done it better than Derek Pacheco recording 4 sacks today and 1 hurry.
