BLACKSBURG, VA - Its been a tough season so far at home for the Blacksburg Ballers after being given their second loss of the season at home once again, this time to the Drinkin' Hellraisers. The Ballers faithful aren't used to losing at home after going 11-1 at home last season (including playoff games) but the future has to remain optimistic for this young team entering its first season in the Canadian Pro League.
"It's frustrating, we'll give it that but the boys have nothing to be ashamed of. This is a talented football club that is in its 3rd year in the CPL. We played them in season 1 in the playoffs and lost by a single and we came back today and proved that we belong here in the CPL." Offensive Co-Ordinator Ryan Betesta.
The Ballers have proven that they can hang with the big boys of AAA past losing to the Yukon Gold Rush by 7 and then tonight by 9 to the Drinkin' Hellraisers in a last minute come from behind victory.
The good news is that the Ballers offense is really starting to come together with Khari Jones posting a season high 392.5 yards through the air with 3 touchdowns and unfortunately, the last minute interception to end the hopes. This is the first time in Khari's career that he has posted back to back 110+ QB ratings and this is in part to the excellent job by the receivers today. Ryan Betesta hauled in 13 catches for 136 yards and James Vita had 7 for 112.5 and a 59.5 yard tocuhdown catch. Dirk Ilicious and BJ would add the other two scores.
The offense would have a few moments of trouble, the Khari Jones interception as well as two fumbles would change the momentum for the Hellraisers who only turned the ball over once, an interception by Beast Baily. The Ballers would take a one point lead early in the 4th but a quick TD strike by Max Schenavar would pull the Hellraisers in front and Khari's interception would seal the deal.
The defense had its share of troubles all day long as Max Schenavar sliced them through the air for 455 yards and 4 touchdowns. An interception by Beast Baily would momentarily change the momentum but Max was just too unstoppable. The run defense came to play though holding them to 74 yards but it would prove to not be enough.
The Ballers now drop to 6th place in this tough portion of the schedule and will now take a quick trip to Hawaii to take on the Hoyas in an effort to rebound. With today's performance, Khari Jones has moved into 4th place in the CPL for passing yards. It is important to note that he has surpassed Jamarcus Fitzgerald of the Yetis and is on pace to break last seasons records if his play continues.
Game Ball: For being the field general that he is and leading this team to almost 400 yards in the air, it is an obvious choice to go with QB Khari Jones for his performance today.
